I have scheduled an MRI for next month. I have terrible headaches and pain. I am so nervous about this MRI. Can anyone tell me what to expect when I go? How long will it last? Results immed? Do I have to wear one of those gowns? LOL. I am serious though.

Maggie,
If you have not read TMJ Symtoms, it might help you.
Also, I've had so many MRI's I've lost count. They are not bad. The time envolved depends on what your Doctor is looking for. Usually, 20 to 40 Min. If, you don't wear anything with metal in it, they usually won't make you put on a gown. I always wear Sweats, with no metal in my under clothing. Here they give you earplugs with a small walkman radio. The machine makes a loud noise. That's the worst part. It usually takes about a week to get the report.

When I had an MRI I found that intravenous valium worked a treat! I was in there for 30 minutes and it felt like 3 minutes! Wonderful stuff ;-) ASk if they can help in this regard - especially if you get a bit claustrophobic

The MRI lasted about 45 minutes and it depends on how calm you can stay while in the tunnel. It is loud (even with the earplugs) and you can't move at all. The valium idea sounds good to me! They also have you put a plastic crank-type thing in your mouth at the end and crank your mouth open.

To me, it was not a joy ride, but the results were VERY worth it. It's the only way to find out what is going on with the discs and soft tissue. Good luck.
