Post liquid or soft diets

My doctor has put me on a liquid diet for the next few weeks and then after that I will be on a soft food diet.

Years ago when I was first diagnosed with TMJ I was on a liquid diet for 3 months ... and I became unhealthy because I wasn't eating the proper nutrition. I lost too much weight and looked sick. I subsisted on soups and spagettos and juice.

This time around I’m trying to eat better, using protein shakes and fruit smoothies (that I make at home so they don’t have extra sugar) I’ve been looking for a cookbook that has suggestions .. but haven’t been able to find one except amazon had a pureed foods with style and panache but it was $77 and was on special order so will take weeks to arrive. (I’m hoping I’m only on this no chew diet for a month) After mentioning this to my friend who is a cookbook author she suggested that I use this time to try to write my own recipes and eventually publish them in a book or on a website so that others on liquid diets can stay healthy. I like the idea because it gives me a purpose while I’m in all this pain.

So I wanted to ask you all … how many of you have been put on a no chew diet? And if you have been on one .. what did you eat? Would you be interested in testing my pureed and liquid food recipes. Or would you like to contribute your recipes to this potential book? Or do you know of a good book .. that would eliminate the need for me to create one?

I've been on a no chew diet for four months now...I'm so over it. I'm in PT post surgery now and am looking forward to real food again! Although, I'd have to say food has become an evil thing that represent pain anymore...

As for diet, I left a recipe on the other link with diet and tmj. It's for a quiche that requires a little chewing, very little though. I can't even chew a banana right now, but I can eat this quiche...

I think the idea of a cookbook is great, because as a chef even I am clueless and would love some new ideas. The last thing you feel like doing when you're in pain is creating new recipes or dishes!

Good luck and best wishes,
Jennifer

I believe there is a cookbook out there called "The Non-chew Cookbook". Try doing an internet search.

My doctor told me I could eat baby food .. I felt kind of humiliated by the suggestion .. so I have to ask ..Has anyone tried that and does it taste ok?

crystalll I just found the no-chew book. I called to order and they said it would take 3-4 weeks before they ship it ... I asked if they could express an order since I'm in need of it now ... but they said non, :-( If anyone is interested their website is at nonchewcookbook.com

I wouldn't order it online ... their online ordering is not secure .. so call it in ...

In the meantime, I think it will give me a purpose for which makes me feel less hopeless by ctrying to create new nutritional recipes. My only problem is that by dinner I'm so exhausted I don't have the energy to create things .. but hopefully I'll start feeling better soon and I’m going to try to prepare things in advance this weekend for next week.. In the meantime I've developed several smoothies that are good for you and taste good (not loaded up with sugar like at smoothie places)

Here's one:
Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

1 banana frozen (peel before freezing)
3 tbs. peanut butter
1 Tbs chocolate syrup
1 cup milk or soy milk
3 ice cubes
2 tbs wheat germ

Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth and all ice cubes are completely crushed.

And it has 26grams of protein, 33% calories from fat according to the nutritional analysis in mastercook.

I working on a butternut squash puree and other recipes this weekend. Let me know if any of you want me to share them as I come up with them … and if you try the chocolate-peanut butter smoothie let me know what you think. My friend who is a cookbook author told me not to include the wheat germ (she hasn’t tasted it she just looked at the recipe) but it mixes in well and wheat germ is really good for you nutritionally especially if you are on a restricted diet so I’m adding it to a lot of things.

I'm love to get any recipes the others of you are using .. ensure and canned soup has gotten quite boring.
