Hi jladams,
The sternocleidomastoid (this is kinda rough) attaches up around your ears, goes down the side of your neck, attaches to the clavicle or collar bone and then to the sternum. If you do a search on it, the picture is worth a thousand words. It's a very large muscle and when it gets tight or spasms, can cause major problems. It can make your ears hurt, make you have that pushing or choking feeling in your throat, make your entire collar bone and surrounding area sore and can make you have chest & back pain. (Again, seeing everything this muscle attaches to, will help you understand the misery it can cause.)
I've had problems several times and massage therapy has worked the best for me. Mild stretches can sometimes help.
Take Care,
Cymy Sue
