Post Splint still not right, may even need a new one now.

Well, I went back to my specialist twice now to have my new lower splint adjusted. (I was the one that it was too tight on my teeth) The first adjustment made really no difference. Today was the 2nd one and he thinks he may have adjusted it too much.(made it too loose) Now when I close my mouth down on the one side it pops off on the other side. He was so upset, but he was trying so hard to make it fit passively and not so tight.

Anyway, he told me to give it a try(3-4 days) and if it keeps popping out to call and they will send my impressions off for another splint to be made. He said there will be no charge as it was his fault and the lab guarantees them for him for a year.

In the meantime, I just cannot wait to get a lower splint that fits right and that I can actually wear to bed at night. So far I have only worn this one two nights between each adjustment. I have resorted back to wearing my upper one till this one is right. I have to wear something or I will have a definite headache. And in the meantime, I have not been able to wean off my flexeril. I figure it is not the right time to do it while trying to adjust to a new splint. If I would get a headache I would never know if it was the splint that caused it or the fact that I stopped the flexeril.

Whew! Sorry to go on and on. Guess this is just bugging me more than I thought. Take care everyone and thanks for listening. Shell

Shell,

Sorry to hear of your splint woes. My son has a lower one, he says that it doesn't "fit" right. The tmj doc said it does. My son says that when he rests his teeth on the left, the right pops up!!! Sounds like you have a similar problem, too. Boy, I wish they'd get these things right, or at least listen. I'm sure the person wearing the thing can have a pretty good idea if it's right or not!!!

Thanks Cheryl! You are exactly right. The person wearing it should know the best! Take care, Shell

Shell,

At least your doc acknowledges the fact that something is wrong with your splint now. When my son's doc said that there was nothing wrong with his splint, I asked if it was normal for one side to pop up like that. (he started having neck pain lately, too, and I wondered if this might contribute to that) He pretty much ignored me, didn't seem to like the idea that I've been doing research on my own, either! The more that I'm learning from all of you, I need to find a new doc!!

Cheryl

Cheryl, He sounds alot like my old dentist. He never admitted that the crown he put in started this whole mess. He just always blamed me for clenching my teeth. I never clenched or grinded until I got the crown that didn't fit right.

It took me awhile to get the right dentist. I had been treating with an orthodontist but he worked closely with my old dentist and would call him every time I asked too many questions. Then he wanted me to wear braces but insisted that I needed surgery too. I went to an oral surgeon for a 2nd opinion and he said in no way shape or form did I need surgery and that I should treat more conservatively I found this new dentist on the American Academy for Craniofacial Pain. I was very lucky to have found him. He is at seminars and conferences at least once a month to keep up on these things. Both his receptionist and hygienist have TMJD problems. It is a very understanding office and he was actually impressed by how much homework I had done.

I hope you have luck in finding someone to help your son. It is very possible that the neck pain is referred from the bite being off on his splint. Have you ever searched on the Academy's website to see if anyone near you specializes in this? It is well worth it. Take care and keep me posted on how your son does. Shell
