Has anybody been treated by a neuromuscular DDS using the neuromuscular method (with splints or otherwise), and has it helped. Anybody treated by or had experience with Dr. Clayton Chan, who has an office in Las Vegas. Thanks. Alex

I am just starting with a TMJD dentist who is going to use a neuromuscular splint on me. He said that due to my muscle test this was the type of splint I needed. I am hoping this will work for me. I also have a displaced disc and lax ligaments in my joint(when I open wide I come out of socket). I am sorry I can't tell you if it will help or not. Also, Dr. Chan has written numerous publications on neuromuscular splints for the TMJ, but I don't know anything about him personally.
Good Luck!!

Thank you Cathleen and Diane. After going to three docs in my state, I have decided I needed to travel out of state to take care of this TMJ, which seems to have progressed fast. I have done some research and I know of LVI and Chan, but I have not heard from any of his patients. I have learned there is a big difference between a theory and actual results. So, it would be nice to read about consistent success stories using the neuromuscular method (or any other promising method). I am trying to research other methods too and find docs that are trained in them. Diane, are you also traveling out of state? If so, where and what doctor? Does your insurance not cover TMJ? I hope we all have success with the neuromuscular splint. Thanks for the info.
Hi-
The first thing he did was get me out of pain immediately, when I told him and his assit. my pain was at a 10, they stopped the exam and put me on a tens unit and provided relief within about 30 minutes, the ringing in the ears stopped, it has been forever that I have lived with the ringing and the pain oh my gosh, just from the tens unit has helped me so much :-) I love to smile, I love to laugh, that is who I am and it has been so painful to be me, but the last couple of days, I am in heaven! I understand that you want to make sure, I do not blame you one bit, and we are self employed we can not afford health/dental insurance and most insurance I have found out does not cover treatment of TMJ. So it is all out of pocket.

Thank you for the info. It amazing that your ringing stopped after a 30 minute session with TENS! That is great!! I would be in heaven if my tinnitus subsides.
I live in a suburb of Phoenix, and I have already seen three of the most referred to DDSs here. I have called Chan's office in LV, and their diagnosis and treatment are very extensive. They are also very expensive (many thousands of dollars), but my insurance should cover part of it. It may only cover a small fraction of what they charge though, and I have to file myself. I have not made a decision yet on what to do.

I'm excited about this post...I've just started my treatment with a neuromuscular dentist in Atlanta. His name is Dr. Fred Abeles and he teaches at the Las Vegas Institute - so I gather that is a very good thing!! Will also cost me over $4000 but that is okay.
I just had my tomograms done and will have a consultation one more time in a week. Then we'll do the neuromuscular workup and order the splint...I'm so excited to get going on this process. I cannot wait.
