I am sorry you are in so much pain. I had some help from a chiropractor and massage therapist - their work over a period of many weeks really helped reduce the pain.
I hope you are feeling better soon. Keep looking for answers!

Hi there!I hear ya!A fine MRI doesn't mean no TMJ for sure.My x rays showed normal joints also!I have TMJ.I have been in and out of offices over 40 times in a year or a little under. It took 10 months just to get diagnosed.I am starting physical therapy tomorrow.(if I get the referral-having probs with that)My muscles throbbed then got so tight, that I have a degree of numbness now in my head, neck, shoulders, and face(jaw might have affected my nerves)I had normal MRIs,CT scans, you name it.One thing you might try besides the other great suggestions,is acupuncture. They put needles in my cheeck muscles, and jaw joint area. The first appointment I saw a huge difference. My cheecks didn't ache,my headache went away, and I could actually open wide!My acupuncture guy worked on a lady that had Lockjaw from TMJ.She was on a liquid diet for months.6 treatments and she could literally smile again. She was so shocked.Make sure they treat you for TMJ specificaly and there is a seperate area(in the forehead)that they treat headaches.I went form 5-7 headaches a week,to 2 in three weeks. The results actually stay with you for some time.Natural Calm (powder form of Magnesium) helps eliminate headaches, anxiety, muscle pain,etc......

I dont know how to get my MD to believe me on my TMJ when I see him Thursday he see my MRI is normal,(I got my copy in the mail) I have to be on my medication, I cant bear this pain, has anyone been here before? I am so scared he is going to think it is all in my head and I dont know what do? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

I am so sad, my jaw, hurts so bad, pops cracks, everything, I always haave to move it because it feels so stiff.

Are there other things that MIMIC TMJ that could make you have all the signs of tmj without having it?

thanks to you all

blue!

The report by the radiologist of my MRI basically said that the joints were within the normal range. My TMJ specialist asked me to go get the films and bring them to him. He reviewed them while I was watching and pointed out the problems with the disk. I asked him why the report said normal. He said that the radiologist is not trained in the intricate problems of the TMJ. For example, my TMJ specialist showed me that the shape of my disk was wrong. This showed that the disk was not articulating on the condyle in the right position. Perhaps you should have a TMJ specialist review the MRI films.

Blueeyes,

TMJD can be muscular. Everyone who suffers does not have deteriorated or displaced disc. The symtoms can be almost the same. Sometimes the popping and cracking is caused from ligaments rubbing over bone. (I think this is correct information. I was told this about my neck making all kinds of noise. It sounded like bones cracking, but I don't have bad disc. Just muscle problems. I think someone else mentioned this recently.)

GenDen is right regarding "who" is reading the films.
When I had disc, my films were sent to several different Radiologists, they didn't know what they were looking at. It took a Specialist from California, who was visiting our UNIV-HOSP. Complex who had seen Mal-formed joints to tell us "what" they were seeing.
This was a long time ago, but it's still a problem.

A couple of years ago, a Visiting OS, training with my last Surgeon looked at my films (before reading my chart) and told me, my disc were small, but were intact and looked good. My disc had been removed completely 4 years before. I told him, he turned bright red, and left. My Surgeon was embarrassed to say the least.

It's very common for the people who read X-rays and MRI's (all day) to miss things. Recently, my sister turned her foot. She couldn't put weight on it or move it. The Radiologist didn't see anything. She took the film to a Foot Surgeon and he immediately seen a lengthwise hairline fracture.

I don't think the valium would have made a difference. They give it to a lot of people who are nervous about getting the MRI.

You are supposed to be able to get any of your records, films, reports, etc.

My Dentist who is treating my TMJD now, has always understood joint problems more than any of the others I've gone to. He can read the films as well or better than most of the radiologists. He knows what to look for. He doesn't advertise as a TMJD Specialist, but he should.

With the symtoms you have, especially the limited opening and a jerk or deviation to one side, any Dentist or Doctor who understands TMJD should know immediately, this is some type of TMJ Dysfunction.
Anyone can say they have pain, but I don't think anybody can "fake" a limited opening and a "Jaw Jerk" (slang). I'm not sure what the medical term for this is, but many people who have TMJD have experienced it to some degree. It's not something you can control.

I'm not an expert on other Disorders that might mimic TMJD. With the symtoms you have, I believe your TMJ Dentist will know for sure. It sounds like TMJD to me.
As the other Members have said, you can have TMJD without soft tissue or disc damage. (That's all the MRI shows.) A lot of Specialists like to use Tomograms also. There are also other diagnostic tests to identify a TMJ Disorder.

Don't let the results of this one test scare you. Not having soft tissue damage or bad disc is really good news. (Your new TMJ Doc may want someone else to look at it) Take one step at a time. Before you start looking for other "Disorders" that might be causing your pain & symtoms, see what the TMJ Dentist has to say.

Take Care,

Cymy Sue

I don't know how it is in your medical facility, but this is how I do it. I go to the place that did the imaging (did the MRI) and ask for the film. They have me sign to check them out. I have to list the doctor that I am going to take them to and I take the films and return them later. I have done this lots of times because I have had 5 MRI's and several CATscans. My husband has done the same with his back MRI. Since I am not in an HMO, I don't know their procedure. Perhaps your TMJ doctor will be the one to request the films. In any case, you paid for them through your insurance and should have the right to have another doctor review them.

Hey Everyone,

BLUEEYES: We have the same type of insurnace, Kasier does sucks, sorry your in pain, believe me I totally understand! but sue has to be right, my mri will probably be the same I have a feeling the guy that did my mri was so mean and kept yelling at me for moving..I wanted to punch him!

I go see my Doctor on Thursday and get my MRI results I am scared to get them! but I will get the fim like you guys said too!

SUE: So if my MRI come out normal like blueeyes, then it is just my muscles that are causing all this pain, I cant bear the pain, it feels like the muscles are so stiff and so tight and wrapped in a tight ball, my limited open has gotten worse, and so have the headaches, I tired actpunture and that almost killed me!
I go see a new TMJ dentist on the 12 I hope he can help me! I have the same insurance as blueyes, I bet they will read my MRI results wrong too! It is getting worse I get these facial spasms in my jaw and face so bad I want to die!!

I will let you know what happens, If it is just the muscles, I guess that a good thing right, but what hell I go though everyday I will be shock if my dis are ok! But maybe thats Kaiser for you they are an HMO with stupid doctors that dont know how to read MRI's.

take care all,

Starr
