Post Newbie questions

I have kinda checked around on the net about TMJ, and have been exploring some of the 'symptoms' that appear... but I figure no one better to ask than those that suffer, and or have dealt with it.

Since this past weekend (approx 3 days) I have been unable to open my mouth more than 1/4", this is the first symtoms that have appeared, my wife does tell me I grind my teeth in my sleep (which I am reading can cause TMJ)... not severe pain (most of the time) associated with opening the mouth, just can't do it, feel constant pressure down on it... before this the only problems were that I was having problems with my wisdom teeth (which appear to be pushing all the rest forward)... anyway, just wonder what a newbie should do / go to, to get the most information on this, and or what the best preventative measures are, for my kids.
Going to the dentist Wednesday...

PS: Still reading through some of the older threads, also came across the diagnoses that this may only be an infected tooth... here's to hoping.

You probably should go to a tmj specialist to have him/her examine you and screen you for tmj. I seems like you do have some early symtoms. You mentioned that you are grind your teeth , this can be caused by a tmj problem. My specialist says that most of the time if the bite problem is corrected, the grinding goes away . of course there is that 10% that will continue to grind. Maybe your general dentist can refer you to one, if not you can go search the american
academy of craniofacial pain for a specialist,
Good luck

Hello and welcome to the board!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would definetly go see your general dentist first before anything else. He can see if there is an infected tooth. But you also could have tmj. If you are grinding when you sleep you are causing a lot of wear and tear on your teeth and also your tm joints. Lock jaw is a common cause of tmj (a lot of us have it). When you go see your regualr dentist tell him that you grind your teeth. With or without pain you still grind. Do you have any other symptoms? There are also some people who have tmj with no pain at all. Your dentist can also refer you to a tmj specialist. It depends on what you decide to do but both specialist and dentists can make a splint for you to wear to help stop your grinding. I would be weary about who you go to for your splint. I have been having troubles on this end. If I were you I would have it made by a specialist. This is the more expensve route but you are able to get a better diagnoses then from a regualar dentist who claims they do tmj.
Since you say that your jaw is locked or pretty much locked try to loosen your muscles around your joints. Apply ice and don't chew on anything. I suffer alot from a locked jaw and my diet has changed to basically liquids and some soft foods. My physcial therapist also says that it is best not to move your tongue too much.

One more thing, an specialist has teh ability to see if your tmj is joint or muscualar. This is a very good thing to know so you have more of an idea of what you are dealing with.

Thanks for the replies... as I said, going tomorrow to the dentist, can't wait. Fortunately for me, my brother is an engineer at Colgate and has been doing jaw / teeth work all his life.. he referred me to this dentist, knowing my symptoms.. hopefully all will work out ok.

As far as other symptoms go, the only real symptom I seem to have is the locked jaw and grinding teeth, which I am told is not every night. I know that when I close my jaw my wisdom teeth are getting in the way (which I am hoping to get removed sometime soon)... I'll let you know how I make out tomorrow, and thanks again for the responses / support.

UPDATE 05/22: Went to the dentist yesterday, it is indeed just an infected tooth, thank goodness... but this should make for a nice warning for anyone who thinks they may have TMJ... good luck all.
