Question Tiffany Ann...are you thinking of getting braces?

Tiffany,

I was reading one of your posts, and you mention that you may go in the direction of getting braces for your situation...I am trying to remember...what is your tmjd condition...did you get your MRI results yet? I seem to remember you said you had a displaced disc...is that right?

I would love to hear from you.

Sandi

Hi Sandi:
Yes, I have been thinking about braces but not until after I get splint therapy first. If splint therapy corrects the problem then I will finish with braces. I did get my MRI done but I still have not got the results. I am going to the hospital tomorrow and requesting a copy of the doctor report who read the MRI so I can see what he said. I don't really trust the doctor who read the MRI though because TMJ is a specialty and these doctors who read x-rays read all x-rays and are not looking closesly at the TMJs so I will want my dentist to look at the x-rays himself and tell me what he sees.

Tiffany,

Thanks for the response. You said you had your MRI done at the hospital...how long was the waiting list for you to get in for your appointment time? The reason I am asking is because the hospitals around this area for MRI test have long waiting lists to get it...a patient will wait as long as 10 months because of lack of MRI machines here. The good news though is that the test is covered by the provincal gov...the bad news is we have to wait a long, long, time to get the test. So, I have been looking at a private clinic that does MRI...but the cost has to come out of my pocket to pay for it...the waiting list is only a week to get the test done. So, I am not sure what I am going to do about that...I will be seeing my current dentist next week, and see what he thinks anyway. It's good that you are taking the film results to your dentist...I will do that when my time comes. Do you know if the specialist can tell if a person has a displaced disc without having a MRI test done? It's my understanding that if your jaw has a limited opening, it would mean that the disc is out of place?. I am just curious, because my dentist doesn't have a clue what condition my joints are in.

Hope to hear from you again, and let me know when you do get the test results. Thanks again.

Sandi

Hi Tiffany,

Ask them for the films as well as the report. My OS wants me to bring the films as he knows what he is looking for rather then the radiologist who just reads them and can miss things if they aren't looking for a specific thing.

Hi Sandi:
I didn't have to wait long for the MRI. My doctor scheduled it on Thursday and I had the MRI done that Sunday so only 3 days wait. I sure hope you don't have to wait 10 months to get yours done. You know, none of us can win, either you have to wait for eternity or you have to pay out the nose. My insurance should pay for most of my MRI though. So, if you go to a private hospital to have your MRI done will you have to pay the entire cost? I think it's just awful to have to wait so long especially when you are in pain.

Jill:
Oh yes, I definately intend to take my films with me as well as the report when I go to see the specialist. I know the radiologist who reads the MRI is not specially trained in TMJ and doesn't look for what the specialist will look for.

Thumbs down

Tiffany,

Thanks. The private MRI clinic is just a privately owned company, so if I go there to get the test done in a week or so, I have to pay full price for it and nothing can cover it, not my insurance or the provincal gov. So, I have been thinking...well I do have some money to pay for it...I don't want to wait 10 long months for the test at the hospital because I want to get to the bottom of my condition and get it treated properly. It will cost me around $750.00 to get it done at the clinic...but I really don't have much of a choice. Now...at the hospital the test would be covered by the government, but to wait 10 months...forget it! You said you waited only 3 days to get your test done at the hospital...your state
government must be doing a great job!

Thanks for listening and have a good night!

Thanks for everything.

Sandi

Hi Sandi:
Here in the states our medical insurance is not run by the government but rather by private insurance companies and our insurance is very expensive here. You said if you have to pay at the private hospital it will cost you $750.00? Where I live an MRI would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,700.00 or more so it sounds alot cheaper there. Do you know if alot of people end up paying for medical care out of their own pocket where you live because the waiting list is so darn long? I guess no system is perfect, huh?

Tiffany,

I have a MSI- medical coverage by the provincal government. Most people have it, so we don't have to pay very much out of our pocket. But the real issue is this...the MRI's that are at our local hosptials have not been used full time (7 days a week) to meet the demands of the public...they are sitting idle when they should be used. The other issue is that there are not enough MRI's to meet our demands. So, something needs to be done here. That's why the waiting list is so, so long to get the test done. Like I said earlier, I am not going to wait 10 long months to get my test done, even though I don't have to pay that much out of my pocket.

So, that's all I can say. I am getting the test
someplace else and pay the full price myself, and wait only a week or so for it.

Sandi

Hi Sandi:
I don't blame you one bit for getting your MRI done at a private clinic and paying the cost. I agree that 10 months is way too long to have to wait for something as important as this. Do let us know when you get your MRI done and what the results are.
