Post Hi Navy

My dentist is a specialist in Tampa named Dr. Ralph Garcia. He is a pioneer in the field of TMJ care. He is excellent, but VERY expensive.
I am due for an adjustment on the 10th, so I was going to try and wait. I am also concerned because my jaw is shifting so far to the left that it's really noticeable now.

I have been wearing this splint for a few months, and he didn't give me a set time of how long it would take to hopefully re-capture that disc. He seems to have high hopes, even though I do not. I'm trying to though.

I'm not sure what the official name is for my splint, but Dr. Garcia invented it, and it's made of acrylic. It is difficult to talk with and eat with, but other than that, it's not too bad. He also designed for me a night guard that hold my jaw in a forward position all night so my jaw doesn't fall back. It's a God send.

Until a couple of days ago, this splint was keeping me pain free. I wonder if it has a lot to do with my muscles hurting so bad, this recent pain I mean.
Well, thanks for your reply.

Hi Kitten.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't heard of your doctor before, but, there are a bunch of people on the board that are very knowledgeable about the specialists in TMJ.

I have 2 problems going on ...muscular and very noisy disc that is probably displaced. The disc itself wasn't hurting, but, lately I am starting to have an ache in that area. When I go to therapy that helps.

I just started with a neuro dentist. i think eventually he will put me in a aplint. Apparently they have had a lot of success with recapturing and/or stabalizing.

The reason that I was asking you about your doctor, was that I originally was going to see a neuro specialist in Tampa. My parents live down there and I was so desperate to find a good neuro that I was going to travel. Now that I found one in Atlanta, it will work out better.

I'm going through the therapy to recapture the disk mainly because I'm concerned that the situation will get worse as time goes on. I do have some of the common tmj symptoms, but, they can usually get under control or come and go. I am getting more aches and minor headache in the left tmj, but, I'm not sure what's going on with that. Maybe I'm having sympathy pains for the board members? ha

So, how long have you had tmj problems? Mine just started getting bad in the psat 18 months.

Maybe I'm being an optimist, but, I'm hoping that after the neuro treatment, splint, and correcting some bad dental work, I'll be symptom free with no popping or clicking. My neuro said that he cannot guarantee that every ache and pain I have in my body can be cured with his treatment ...but, he can take care of the clicking/popping, strain on the tmj and get me in a comfortable (with the muscles) bite. Hopefully the can recapture the disc or at least get me in a position where the joint is stabilized and heals.

I hope you feel better kitten,
Take care!
Navy

Hi navy,
I'm glad you found a doctor you like. Mine lectures about TMJ all over the world and he often brings dental students into the office to oberve, which I think is great!
I've been having TMJ symptoms for almost two years. At first they would come and go for only a short period of time. And then they just stayed. My bite flet really off, and my jaw shifted, and I was in excrutiating pain 24/7.
I very much believe in a positive attitude. But soemtimes the pain is soooo bad, it really gets me down.
Thanks for getting back to me. I hope we will both be feeling better soon.
