Hi MDLA!
Okay, the my nueromuscular dentist explained it to me, in regard to my TMJD.
As a little girl, I began to breath through my mouth because my parents would smoke in the car and couldn't handle the smell. Well, because of that, my upper pallet did not expand the way it should, which to do so, as a child, you must breath through your nose. That is what started it for me. Now, I was "subclinical" until 2 years ago when I had a bad filling that changed my bite. That took me from the "subclinical"... no symptoms, to full blown TMJD symptoms. Some people may have TMJD but have no symptoms all of their lives, until something like a bad filling, injury, car accident.
I hope this helps!
Later
Diane
