Neuromuscular dentist/insurance??? - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

Has anyone here been covered by their insurance to see a neuromuscular dentist? I am hoping with a referral it would be. I spoke with one office today that said I have to come to the initial exam for $98, then they will check with the insurance. The oral surgeon I went to first got approval for all pre-treatment and surgery, because he coded TMJD as a medical condition. I am just wondering if the same is true for other treatments.....Thanks for any input.

I'm taking my son to see a Neuromuscular dentist right now. I believe that he started going in late May. The insurance IS reimbursing us slowly for some of the things that we had to pay up-front for. They are covering it. This is being sent in to our medical insurance though. His diagnosis was Myofacial Pain Dysfunction, which is a medical condition, so fortunately, it has been working out well for us.

I'm a bit surprised that your surgeon got your claims paid for by listing TMJD as a medical condition.

Well, I do not have any insurance at all. The thing I know from this board, be sure that the nueromuscular dentist does not put it down as TMJD, as most insurance companies will not pay for TMJD treatment because there are so many bad treatments out there. As I understand though, they will pay for MPD Myofacial Pain Dysfunction. I would think the nueromuscular dentist would know that, but be sure and point it out to them when you go in for your first visit.

I noticed you said the insurance is slowly giving you back some of the money you spent on a neuro-dentist. Is the neuro-dentist you use doing the insurance submissions for you or do you have to do that on your own.

The reason I ask, I don't mind doing the work but when ever I submit myself it seems things never get paid. I also don't know what to think about a medical/dental establishment that doesn't offer to bill insurance on your behalf even when you do pay upfront because ive dealt with a guy who made my splint last year that turned out to be a big fraud.
