Lightbulb Grinding is genetic?

My girlfriend had an appointment today to check her teeth because she's a heavy grinder, so she asked the doc wether or not this sort of "activity" is genetic because her mom does it aswell
The answer was yes

Seems strange to me that grinding is genetic, like cracking your nuckles...

Has anyone else heard this?

im wondering if the genetic component isnt necessarily grinding itself but more of a personality trait that's genetically passed on. maybe people who grind and clench tend to get stressed out easily or are high strung... maybe we tend to internalize stress instead of 'properly' dealing with it.

that's my guess anyway.

oh, and, btw, a huge percentage of the population grind and clench their teeth.. the problem begins when the grinding and clenching becomes a habit and the person has a predisposition to TMJD..
