Ouch,
I have been reading your post. I don't know how old you are, but you really have got to find a way to get a good splint. Are you old enough to work or get a part-time job? A retainer is not going to help you with TMJ. You need a TMJ dentist to treat you with a splint to get your symptoms under control, and then it sounds like you need orthodontic work. It is a lot of money, but you cannot afford to not do it. TMJ surgery is not covered under health insurance and if not treated it can ruin your life for good. If you get a good TMJ dentist he can get you out of pain with splint therapy. I believe it can happen and you can avoid all the damage that so many of us have suffered. I hope you can find a way to afford treatment. take care.
