I did some searches on the net for the products you talked about. I know my sister took something natural and had a reaction, but, I'm not sure if that's the case for me. Isn't it something having a complicated family history? You know my sisters have most of the problems. My Mom is 80 and doing great. She didn't even get high cholesterol or thyroid until her late 70's.
A few months after my surgery, they came out with that HRT report that scared the daylights out of everyone. Since then they have found more negatives. At the time, I thought I made the right choice. But, obviously I need to take something. I'm not sure where to start. Do I go to an internist or what? My family doctor and GYN just know to write the prescriptions for the synthetic HRT. I don't think they practice natural at all. My GYN made a comment about people practicing natural medicine in their garages.
So far, I've been coping pretty well considering everything....but, apparently my body is getting really whacked out. I think the people that say that they don't need estrogen are the ones that still have their ovaries. My doctor and I had an agreement that he would remove mine if absolutely necessary. I was 47 at the time and usually he recommends removal because of the risk of ovarian cancer later on. As it turned out, there wasn't much left anyway.
The TMJ doctor said he has had a lot of patients with hormone problems that needed estrogen and that seemed to help some of the problems with their muscles. In all the years that I had GYN check-ups, no one ever checked my hormone levels. I don't even know what they were before the surgery, which I have now found out was important.
There are a few websites that you can order the compound you talked about and others that require a doctor's prescription. I have also been told about a progesterone cream that can be used. There is also a Yam product that you can get in the natural food store. I'm confused. I went on this pilgrimage about 6 months ago, but, got scared off because even the natural products are not regulated and you just don't know what is safe.
What I take requires a presciption, even though it's natural. It also has to be made by a qualified compounding pharmacist. The procedure here is, the Doctor, in my case an Internist, writes the script and the compounding pharmacist requires several pages of information regarding age, surgeries, other health problems and symtoms. Then he compounds the formula for your needs. Having levels checked by a doctor beforehand is not absolutely required, but it would give the pharmacist more information.
Having levels checked is more important for those going through menopause naturally because their levels fluctuate. For those of us who do not have ovaries, we have no levels unless we have been on some type of replacement.
I had mine checked after I had been on this formula for a while to make sure everything was OK. It was and also with my last bone density test, the bone demineralization had stopped.
I would not use anything OTC or ordered. I want someone personally to review my history and symtoms and make a formula that's right for me.

Hi Cymy Sue,
The nurse practitioner I see is very good with internal medicine (according to the PC doctor). She may recommend an internist. I'll have to get a referral regardless. I'm not sure where you find a compounding parmacist...but, maybe the family owned pharmacy does it. All I know is that TMJ has been getting worse for me. Maybe this explains some of the increasing muscle problems and burning sensations and pain in the joints/face that I never had a problem with before. My TMJ Doc does not want me concerned with the disc position, but, wants to get me well in the other areas first. My condyles are not arthritic or degenerative, my opening is now 52.5, so, maybe if we get to the bottom of the hormone replacement problem I'll be able to have better results with the splint therapy.
I have already run into the oppostion that you are speaking of. All of my health care providers are very old school. They do not offer you any alternatives and you would think natural was a foreign language.

I was off-line calling the family owned pharmacy in town. The pharmacist was very knowledgeable and helpful ...and yes they do compounds. The branch by the hospital does even more of the hrt compunds ...so, I'm calling there when they open so that I can speak to the pharmacist that I was referred too. I was also given the names of several doctors that follow this line of thinking. I was told that usually they do a saliva test and make the recommendations to the pharmacist and the pharmacist works with the doctor in determining the right levels. Apparently, there is no compund pharmacist in the area that does their own testing ....so, I have to go to the doctor first. This is fine with me. Thank-you so much Cymy Sue. You have helped steer me in the right direction.

CONTINUED.....Cymy Sue, I spoke with the other pharmacist. He said nothing over the counter has enough of anything to really help. He knows the doctor that I have been referred to and said he's a good choice. The business card reads Natural Hormone Therapy & Pain. The doctor deals in preventive medicine. I've called and left a message that I'd like an appointment. I feel like I might finally be on the right track. I get so lost in the health food stores and everyone has a different opinion on what to take. This way I will be tested and the compound will be made specifically for my body. I'm not sure how they test though. One pharmacist mentioned a saliva test...the other pharmacist mentioned blood work ....and a naturalist mentioned a hair sample ...I'll see what the doctor says. Sometimes I wish I never had the hysterectomy, but with a tumor the size of mine, there weren't a whole lot of options. I haven't taken anything today, so, I better go take the potions that are supposed to get me through the day
