Question ear clogged during sleep - need help to un-clog it

last night, i woke up and itched the inside of my ear. it went weird: it felt clogged and started to buzz. i didnt think much about it, and fell back to sleep. this morning, i woke up, and realized just how clogged it is.

the symptoms:
+ left ear is extremely clogged - can barely hear out of it
+ feeling of fullness
+ doesnt hurt
+ faint buzzing
+ if i jiggle my finger in my ear, it partially unclogs, but immediately re-clogs itself

does anyone know any techniques to unclog an ear? im fairly q-tip phobic, but perhaps i lodged ear wax far into the canal when i itched my ear last night.

my biggest worry is that my TMJD is causing this, since ive had minor ear problems since september.

thank you so much for your help. im probably being paranoid, tho, and it'll clear up on its own. :)

- saaraah.

baah! this is so frustrating. my ear un-clogged after i wiggled my finger in it really hard, and it stayed un-clogged for an hour or so, but now it's re-clogged. i have no idea why it's doing this.

*sigh*

Hi Saaraah, The same happened to me in June,at that time I had nerve damage, the fulliness lasted about 6 weeks. It came back 1 week ago. I go back to an ear doctor on the 12th. I think it may be Meniers Disease. I one thing I am confused about is the ear itching. IThe very same thing happened to me, I woke with my finger in my ear! It feels like my left ear isfull of water and my right ear is 1/2 full. I feel a pressure at both.Jan

Re: ear clogged during sleep - need help to un-clog it

Hi Sarah,

I was up with this exact problem last night. I get this quiet often. I wake during the night generally because of the buzzing and find I cannot pop my ears. My TMJ specialise said the buzzing if from the fluid build up behind the ear pressing against the inner ear. My method of resolving this is to sit up, or get up out of bed. Once you do the fluids will start to drain downwards. I often massage behind my ears in a downward motion as if Im trying to push it down towards my throat and it clears them quicker. Making a hot drink helps too and sipping on it. If you can handle sleeping with you head elevated that will stop the congestion too, otherwise the only solution is to take decongestants. Good luck!!
