I have also been reading your posts for around a year. i have had tmj for about 8-10years. To start with the dentist refused to treat me and sent me to the doctor the doctor came up with stress and glandular fever even though the test proved i didn't, he then refered me back to the dentist. The dentist refered me to specialist who took ut 2 of my wisdom teeth, still in pain i was told by my doctor 8 months after the opp "what do you expect you have had surgery" so i changed dentist and doctor. New dentist refered me to have my other 2 wisdom teeth removed still pain suggested i needed fillings which i refused and changed dentists once again.
I live in UK and there is a years waiting list to see specialist then another year before surgery. After the romoval of my wisdom teeth and still in pain a found a good doctor and dentist. I have now been referd to specialist and was refered to another hospital to have a arthoscopy. After a 2 year wait i have finaly had an aappointment at the end of this month. But unfortunatly because i had been on NASID's for meny years the caused an ulcer in my stomach and a month ago i was rushed into hospital for a week which is when they discovered the ulcer and now the only medicen i can take are co-codamol and amitriptaline. Because of my jaw they refused to perform an endoscopie on my stomach .
Can somebody please advise me of how long it takes to recover from an arthoscopy as i only recived a letter from my specialist because when i saw him i saw a locum who new nothing about tmj and had speak with somebody else.
Sorry for such a long post.

Seems as though you have many dentists who may be off course with your TMJ. My first question is, how do you know you have TMJ? Did a Doctor or Dentist confirm this for you? If so, then you should look into getting braces to realign your bite. Whatever health professional told you that you had TMJ should have given you quite a bit of information about the long term effects of TMJ and the solutions to getting rid of it or stopping it in it's tracks. A coworker of mine and my wife had TMJ. My coworker suffered from severe pain from time to time which started at his mandable joints and radiated through the back of his teeth and gums. My wife would suffer severe joint pain as well, which radiated through her temples and would give her very painful headaches. Both recieved braces through Monarch Dental Associates to straighten and realigned their teeth to bite down more evenly and anotomically correct. Neither one of them have any symptoms whatsoever since the year and a half of braces they endured. My wife hasn't had any pain in her jaws or a headache for the past two years now. Her teeth looked fine in the first place and didn't appear to need braces for a cosmetic reason, however her teeth didn't bite down evently and needed to be moved around a bit. This may be what you need...
I'm glad you decided to join in after reading for a while. I guess you have read some of the posts on surgery and see we mostly have members who have had some problems afterwards. We have in the past had a few who reported successful procedures. It's been a while.
I've had 2 arthroplastic procedures or open joint surgeries so I don't know if I can help with the procedure you would be having. There are several different procedures that are called athroscopies. If you would feel comfortable posting what you need to have done, it's possible I or some of the other members might could give you some information.
From my own experiences, a lot of research and the posts made here, it seems everyone responds differently and healing time varies according to the procedure.
We have other members from your country and it seems treatment and procedures are a little different there. However, the same applies here, within our country from Doctor to Doctor and Surgeon to Surgeon.
It does seem some surgeons tend to shy away from these surgeries a little more now and others are still doing them, even the ones that seem to have a chance of not working so well.
I'm sorry to hear about the ulcer and the TMJ problems are hindering the test you need. I did have an endoscopy about 1 1/2 years after a bilateral discectomy. I was still in a lot of pain and had a very limited opening, but was able to have the test and it didn't make the pain and other symtoms worse.
I'm sure you've read here, these surgeries do carry many risks and sometimes do make the symtoms worse. With most of them, you would have a very limited opening for quite a while and it takes time to heal.
I'm sorry, it sounds like you've really had a hard time and I'm not being very helpful. It's very hard to deal with other health problems when the TMJD has to be considered first. It's even worse if you need to have a surgery in the midst of it all.
It appears you've been bounced around with Doctors and Dentists quite a bit and had to wait a long time to get to a Specialist. Is he absolutely certain that a surgery is needed? Has anyone tried to help you with splint therapy? I apologize for asking questions and again, don't feel that you have to answer, unless you would feel comfortable doing so. You didn't elaborate on how bad your TMJ condition is and I just wondered if it might be possible that a splint therapy would work faster, compared to surgery healing time, to get you to a point of being able to have the endoscopy.
Not knowing your TMJ condition, I was also curious if they explained why they couldn't do the endoscopy. I was not doing well after the surgery I mentioned and the gastroenterologist was made aware of my TM joint condition and was able to do the test, without further harm.
I am sorry to hear of all these serious problems coming at one time. I wish I could help you more and had some definite answers for you. I know trying to deal with a bad TMJ problem and other illnesses can be a rough road.
Hi!
I am new here also. I have had an arthropasty with siliastic implant then a disection to remove it. It was very successful until a car accident. Now due to the artheritus that has set in as well as the bone spurs and trauma to the joint, 2 doctors have strongly recommended I undergo a total temporolmandibular joint replacement. I hope that your surgery goes well. Good luck to you

Thank you for your reply i am so glad that i finaly posted. I have tried wearing a splint 24/7 for about 3 monthe but my specialist said that it had just made my jaw worst, for the past 2-3 years i have had a limited jaw opening of approx 22mm. The other problem i have is that my cheeks are always bright red. According to 1 specialist i saw he said that my jaw was a womens condition and the redness of the cheeks well he said that it had nothing to do with my jaw pain. yet my cheeks keep getting redder and hotter with the pain. I have a problem eith my specialist but i cant get referal to anyone else.
