Question Could this be TMJ

Hello .. I am looking for some advice and or input .. A little backround , I am 41 years old , and take very good care of my teeth , flossing once a day every day , brushing properly , and see my dentist 2 x a year .. for cleaning and check up .

Now ..I have been having a problem for quite some time now ,m my symptoms are pain along the loew gum line , and even recently , slight bleeding on lower gum line when I floss .

The pain is worse around a tooth on lower back of mouth ..that has a crown on it .. , and the pain radiates from there to the entire lower gumline ..it is a constant throbbing ..almost feels like it did ..when years ago when I had braces.. it almost feels like it used to when I would get them tightened . But when I floss it is a shrp cutting kind of pain .

I have seen 3 different dentists , and a periodontist ..who that I have some recession..but that I do not have periodontal disease .

I recently changes dentist ..this one took several x-rays of the tooth that has a crown on it . as well as a panoramic x-ray .. he chekced , checked and re-checked ..and sees nothing wrong but ..all the people that have looked do say it looks slightly red around the cronwed tooth .

I will say that I wake up abut twice during the night with my teeth clenched very tightly together .. I also find that when I wake up in the morning ..my teeth are very tightly clenched together .

So..my question is .. does anyone know ..is it possible to night bruxism ..and or TMJ to cause the things I have experiencing ..and are TMJ and Bruxism the same thing ? If I have night bruxism or TMJ.. are those night guards helpful .. or not..I have to wonder if wearing a night guard just gives you something else to bite on at night ...so I wonder if they really help .

Does anyone know what this might be .. I just can't continue to afford running from dentist to dentist , specialist to specialist .. only to hear..looks a little red..but other than that it looks fine and i can't see anything wrong .

I would appreciate any input anyone can give me on this .

Thank you so much , Michelle

Another Michelle? Sometimes I think just being named Michelle is a risk factor.

I don't know about the bleeding, but in my personal experience, clenching did cause my tissue to become irritated in places. Some types of mouth guards give you a surface on which to clench more effectively, and so they can cause problems for people who clench a lot. I use an NTI device that diminishes the intensity of my clenching. Judging from what I've read here though, the success of NTI depends a great deal on the doctor. You may want to discuss your clenching, and the options for dealing with it, with your dentist.

I hope you find the answers you are seeking.

Best wishes.

Hi Michelle,

An NTI is a device that fits only on your front teeth. I wear mine on my top teeth, but I have heard of people wearing it on the botton. It diminishes the intensity of clenching by not allowing you to clench on your back teeth or canines.

One of the big risks of NTI (as I see it) is that as your muscles become more relaxed, your bite relationship can change. For me, my bite became more open in the front. If that's not a risk you want to take, NTI may not be the best choice for you.

If you want more detailed information, please let me know.

Take care.

Hi Michelle:
Your symptoms could be caused from your clenching.Clenching can cause all kinds of strange symptoms and problems. Have any of these dentists or specialists you have seen mentioned TMJ or problems that clenching can cause. There are many different types of splints for different problems. I am on my fourth splint right now. I have had 2 upper and 2 lower ones. My present splint is a lower splint and is working extremely well for me but it takes a dentist who is knowledgeable in TMJ and related problems to find the splint which will work best for your problem.
