Unhappy Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

My TMJ symptoms are not painful, as most of the postings here. I am in 5 wk of my splint therapy and I did feel a little better around the 4th wk - my energy improved, etc.

I am really nervous though because my vision is still not right. I have read that the SCM muscle can cause vision problems, including dim vision, which is what I guess I have. My neck is so tight on the left side, I feel knots in it. My vision was my primary symptom a few years ago. Most of the time I wake up and my eye and facial muscles feel fatigued. I've ran around to several eye dr.s, ENT, neurologist (CT scan) and they say everything looks ok. My TMJ dr. is sending me back to the PCP to review my symptoms. My right disc is displaced, and this all started after I had my wisdom teeth removed. I have seen a rolfer and she believes it is TMJ.

I'm worried . . . could this be ms? I've been praying alot lately. Help.

Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

Katt,
I TOTALLY understand your worry. These eye and vision problems most certainly are from your tmj. I myself was sent to a neurologist because my dr thought I had MS. Thankfully I did not, and it has all been resolved with the correct splint. You have been to the right drs and had the right tests, I am sure now you just need to get your splint adjusted better, that being off could cause your symptoms you describe.

Keep us posted and well wishes,
Karen

Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

heidi,
I am soooooooooooo glad you are having some relief from your pain finally!!! I cannot believe how much pain you have suffered with no help.

Congrats on finishing up the 2 classes and I will be wishing you lots of luck on your exam today!!

How do they do the tonogram? I am sorry it was painful, I didn't know that it was, what causes the pain??? YUCK!

Are you having to take Vicodin and Neurontin or does just the Neurontin do it for you now? Which ever as long as you are getting some relief is all that matters.

I am into my second week with my new hard splint and doing really, really well. I only have some mild pain and tightness and even that is getting less and less, I am so happy I found this dentist and he was able to get me back on track so quick! He still has me on the same meds and said he will probably keep me on those for a while to keep things at peace with my jaw muscles. Thank you for asking......

Let me know how you made out on your test today,
Karen

Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

heidi,
If I would have come here BEFORE I got in with my current dentist, you would have met a whole different person!! hahaha, I was the worst person to ask about going to a dentist to be treated for tmj, I have NO confidence. He has been a true God send!! I told him today that he has literally given me my life back and I really mean it! I know that over the next several months he will get me back to where I once was.

The tonogram sounds simply dreadful! I can't imagine you having to go through it. I too don't understand the depths of you pain. I didn't know you were still taking the ms contin, will they wean you off of that? I can only guess that you are experiencing deep nerve pain, I am so in hope you are getting to the bottom of this. When will you get the results?

I really believe that if you can get into the right dentist this time and he can make and fit the right splint, I think it will offer you some relief.

I am soooooo amazed at all you have continued to accomplish with this monster of a condition. I hope you have a truely AWESOME night tomorrow night!!!! I cannot believe you are pulling a wedding together on top of everything, you are to be admired girl!!!!

Let me know as soon as your tonogram results come back in.
Karen

Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

heidi,
I am soooooo confused as to how the tonogram could show NOTHING?!?!?! I thought for sure it would show some HORRIBLE problem, geesh, what now? I will be anxious to hear about your June 11th appt!

I am glad you are at least getting some relief from your pain, and I hope the Neurontin continues to work. I think on of the hardest things about your pain problem is NOT KNOWING WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

Lightbulb Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

About 2 months ago I started having some weird eye problems. Some pain deep inside my eye. I went to my eye doctor and he has checked out everything he can think of that could be a problem with my eye. He had me get an MRI to see if it was orbital neuritis...blood tests, CT for sinus problems. I went on antibotics for 12 days. Still had the pain. Then my face began to swell around my eye and around my upper cheek. Then I realized that I wasn't able to open my mouth very wide. See, I was in a traffic accident about 10 years ago. The car ran us off the freeway by hitting right in the passenger side door of which I was sleeping against. I had two surgeries in which they cleaned up the scar tissue in my TMJ. For the last 8 years it has been pretty good except for occassional popping and such. I do wear a splint at nights. But as I began to put some things together, it has to be my TMJ all inflamed! It is hurting so very bad right now. That is why I found this board while looking up things about the TMJ. After the accident I saw a specialist in SLC Utah. But now I just go to my dentist. So, the long and short of it , yes, I do think that the TMJ can effect the eyes.

Re: Are Vision Problems TMJ Related?

I am curious, what kind of doctor do you call your tmj doc? I cant find ONE doctor that knows enough about it or takes it seriously. Who do you see?
