undefined Hi, new here. I have been told I have TMJ and eustachion tube dysfunction in my ears. I went to the doctor today but he didnt really answer my question..just kinda smiled and nodded. He was and ENT...anyway, what I feel is: bad headache across forehead and temples, tight jaw, pressure in ears radiating down neck and a slight numbness feeling to face and neck..almost like tension, tight numb, not actual numb so that I cant feel them. I also suffer from anxiety and this only worsens due to how I feel. I start thinking my brain is swelling and I am going to die. Can anyone else relate to the pressure and numb feelings?
thank u for existing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
thank u for posting your symptoms.
I have exactly that!
I woke up one day back in march with a stiff jaw and stuffy ear on the right side.... 2 days later i got violently dizzy and ended up in this fog... that was 9 weeks 2 days ago
i was first diagnosed with vertigo
after many tests.. mri, eeg, eng, and blood work all coming back normal i talked to my dentist who says i have tmj
i am constantly in a fog/ dream like state, i get dizzy when i move my head side to side... when i walk i feel drunk... my tubes feel sticky.. my ears pop sometimes and sometimes they dont like right now they wont.
the pain in my jaw hurts ... im waiting for my splint to come back from the lab... i hope to god it fixes all my problems.
i too have anxiety from it ... i went so long not knowing what it was...
i get the pressure in the sinuses.... temple.. above my ear and behind my ear.... i totally understand the numbing u mean... if i touch there i can feel but if im not touching it ,... it feels like coming down off novacane.
im so glad that you posted cause it just eases my mind to confirm that it is tmj making me feel this way.
im sorry you have to be in this boat tho.
i have a 13 month old.. i missed her first b-day cause of this crap.. i havent been able to pick her up or play with her cause im so out of it. I wasted 8 weeks thinking it was labyrinthitis cause i believed my ent... who now says he doesnt think its labs and is at a loss. THANK GOD FOR MY DENTIST!!!!
hope you start to feel better quickly!!!!!!!!!! we can recover together!
undefinedundefinedOMG, I am glad you responded!! I woke up again this morning and it seemed like the blood was not getting to my head and face. It felt numb, yesssssssss you are right about the coming off novacane feeling!! I woke up in a panic because I hate feeling like this. I have seen an ENT twice, they did all these tests on me to see why I feel dizzy. They determined that is was not brain function or middle ear probs. Is that a relief? Well not when you have anxiety and need an answer as to WHY WHY WHY do I feel like this. I have a dentist appt on 6-14-04. I am just tired of docs speculating, I want a real concrete answer as to why I feel this way. I could handle the pain, but when its something abstract like numbness and dizziness it freaks me out. The pain in the jaw itself is not bad. Mostly I have headaches, numbness, blurred vision and dizziness. All blood tests checked out, they even checked me for lupus. What is the labrysomething you refer to? The only thing I have not had is mri or ct, but I am going to have a ct scan of my sinuses, ordered by the ENT just to make sure. Tell me more, I am here listening....
HA HA HA... those were my exact words to my dentist yesterday. I told him... Dr Kim.... I can handle the pain... and the discomfort.. the not eating steak and potatoe chips... BUT I CANT TAKE THE DIZZINESS AND PRESSURE!!! He promised me he was gonna do everything he knows to fix me.
Out of every dr. I have been to.. my dentist has been the most soothing to my mind.
Labyrinthitis is the inflamation of the inner ear which causes dizziness/ unbalance/ spacyness... and nausea... supposedly it can last anywhere from a week to 8 months my ENT said. it comes on suddenly and then just lingers. It usually follows a cold or a flu and its a virus in the middle ear.
thats why i sat around for 8 weeks wasting my time. when 8 weeks hit .. he said he didnt think it was labyrinthitis.. especially since the ENG came back normal meaning i dont have an inner ear problem.
its not a brain problem either. nor is it lupus or lyme or thyroid or pregnancy or anemia.. or blood sugar.
my dentist assured me that since everything has come back normal... that he believes 90% its TMJ.. and that he is gonna fix me right up.
there were days where i woke up and my cheeks and nose and forehead and tips of my ears and behind my ears felt like i had novacane.... then there were days like today where i just turn my head to the right and i get that feeling in my temple and behind my ear.
my tubes in my ears feel so stiff like they pop but only half way.. i feel like they could open more.. and sometimes they do but minutes later they are clogged back up.
my neck hurts, my shoulder hurts and my arm aches.... when i yawn i can feel my sinus being stretched.
this is the worst thing ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told my husband that after this we have to have another baby cause i missed all this time with skyler she started walking and talking and doing all these new things .. blowing kisses and all... and im not the one that taught her all of that my heart is so broken.
awww I am sorry you are heart broken. I feel I am missing alot too, I have a 7 yr old. I already have been dealing with anxiety issues and some bad medication. I feel like I am not living life and now this is one more thing that is causing my anxiety to top the charts. When I get scared or panicked the numb novacane feeling intensifies, then the panic intensifies, and so on and on and on. I just wish a doctor could tell me yes for sure that what I am feeling is because of one specific thing. The ENt told me he thinks that arthritis might be setting in my jaw and wants me to take some cortizone type pills to get rid of swelling in my jaw and sinuses. Again, its only a speculation on his part and I am scared of new medications. I am going back on anti anxiety meds this weekend, so my nerves are up already. If only this constant pressure and numbness would go away!!!! THe dizziness has gotten better, so dont give up hope. That is the main reason I went to the ENT and its not as bad now, I just had to wait it out. I think most of the world must have tmj so why isn't it talked about more? And why cant one doctor fix it all? They keep sending me to different doctors once they are sure that its all anxiety and tmj and want to get rid of me. Some doctors wont even acknowledge the tmj, its just anxiety in their book. Hang in there, you are on the road to recovery and there will be many many precious memories for you and your daughter. I am curious to know how your new splint will work out, does your insurance cover it? Years ago when a dentist tried to talk me into one, mine did not cover it and I doubt it does now. We are gonna get through this!!!!
dajone and 8 mile.........
I was just reading your post at the top and I couldn't help but read them all!! I too have suffered from all that you both mention. I have had tmj for about 10 years now and I wanted you both to know that you CAN get better!! I have had many good times in between flare ups, the key is getting a dentist who knows tmj thoroughly and who knows how to make and adjust a splint.
In the past I was tested for the things you had mentioned and also for a brain tumor and MS. I have been in bed with dizziness so severe I had to hold onto the wall to walk. I also have had the pressure in the face and sinuses, the numb and tingly feeling all over my face and head, the fullness in the ears and severe pain all over my face, head, neck, shoulders back and upper arms. I too suffer from anxiety and panic disorder and I know how the anxiety escalates when you don't know what in the world is wrong.
Tmj causes a WORLD of symptoms. I am currently in my 4th splint. I have been in this one for about 3 weeks and after about 2 days I was dramatically better. Keep posting and let me know how you both are doing!!
Oh, you are an answered prayer. I thought I was crazy or dying all weekend. I know what the jaw pain is, but when it comes to dizziness and numbness I freak out. I just started back on lexapro this weekend as well. I was almost hysterical with fright, sure that it was a brain tumor or blood clot or my brain was swelling. Yesterday when I woke up it hurt to swallow behind my ear. Then I had major ear pain all day, I had to lay on a heating pad. I went to the dr today- no infection, he thinks it was eustachian blockage. Its better today, but I had a bad weekend. The numbness on saturday and most of sunday was what was freaking me out. I hate having anxiety/panic disorder.Thank you for responding. I have a dentist appt on June 14. I think its inevitable to have tmj when you have anxiety, so here we are suffering. Have you noticed that some doctors dont really acknowledge tmj symptoms as just that? I have not had an mri or ct scan yet but the ent wants to do ct scan on my sinuses only. I guess nothing that I have told the 3 docs I have seen makes them see a reason to do mri. Wow, thanks again for responding, it helps to know there are others who can relate.
I am glad I read your post!! I know it is TERRIBLE to have those symptoms and not know what it wrong! You can have all those expensive tests, but really, if you have tmj the ct scan and MRI of sinuses and such are going to be normal and just cost you time and money. If you want to do them for peace of mind, then by all means go ahead!! I know it doesn't make the symptoms less, but just knowing what is causing all these symptoms at least gives you an answer.
My tmj was diagnosed by a neurologist actually. I had been sent to him as a last resort and my dr thinking that I probably had MS starting. He did some standard motor testing and said tmj right off the bat! The dentist I went to back then helped me right away! He was wonderful, but with insurance changes I had to leave him. I went through many, many dentists between him and the one I have now and had NO help in between so make SURE you are getting in with the right one. Most of us on this board have been to scads of dentists til we found the one that could help. Remember also that just because someone calls themself a "tmj specialist" doesn't mean squat!!!!!
I guess you are not taking any prescription meds in the meantime???? Try to eat VERY soft foods and nothing that is chewy. Make sure you don't put any pressure on the joint either such as talking on the phone at length with the receiver up against it. Try Flexall or one of the muscle creams, take 600 mgs of ibuprfen after your largest meal if you don't have pain med. Also, run a washcloth under HOT water and ring it out and lay the rag on your face to let the steam hit your sore tired face. Ice can help your joints if they hurt themselves. I don't know if you grind your teeth at night or not, but sleep on your back with your neck kind of propped. Try to keep your lips together......teeth apart.......tongue against the roof of your mouth when you are not talking or eating. One other tidbit is to fold up a piece of gauze into a thick kind of piece and put one on each side of your mouth and bite down on it with your mid to back molars. Make sure you do it on each side, this is kind of a make shift splint of sorts, but let me tell ya, it will make a world of difference in a pinch. You can also buy those round, rolled kind of cottony things like they use to pack a wound......do you know what I mean?
