My story pls help me - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

Hi.. I recently got hit abit under the TMJ area.. It was swollen (5 Days), i heard a cracking sound (a week and a half but it was getting better every day until 1 and a half weeks), headache (abt 6 days) it was difficult to eat (a week and abt 2 days). I went to the doctor 3 days after this happened and he checked jaw and he didn't think it was broken or anything and he let me take an x-ray off it. I went to take a x-ray and on the results it said that it viewed the normal routine views of the Mandible as well as an OPG study of the mandible. No fracture was found but the dentition on the OPG study shows impacted lower third molars on both sides. No other abnormalities are identified. Thats wat it said for the xray. When the doctor saw this, he said it was probably cracking because it was bruised. Will i be getting TMJ in the future? What are the chances? thanks

I dunno, did you see a doctor or a dentist? Does impacted mean they can't come through the gum, like they haven't come in yet? I would want to see a dentist who could check out more of what is going on. I haven't heard of using x-ray and OPG for TMJ probs, usually they do tomograms or MRI to make sure the discs are in place and everything. It sounds like you could have TMJ or develop it later on, I'm glad this episode cleared up quickly for you.

Thanks for replying. I went to the doctor. Impacted means that something come in contact with lower third molars (Fist). This TMJ, If my disc hasn't moved yet, must it have moved in order for me to have TMJ? Could i have got hit there where the 3 molars are and not get TMJ? What would have caused the cracking sounds which dissapeared at 2 weeks max? thanks

No the disc don't always move, I bet half the people here don't have disc problems yet have TMJ. In the beginning, TMJ symptoms come and go. I don't know about the impact. Knowing what I've gleaned from the boards and dentists, if I had gotten hit and had cracking and difficulty eating, even if it were just temporary, I think I would ask my dentist if he knew someone who did TMJ work and get it checked out just to be on the safe side. It doesn't have to be a specialist, it could be a dentist who does TMJ work. Good luck!
