My kid is scheduled for an MRI later on today. This is his second, the last one was nearly two years ago. Is an MRI taken with or without his splint in.........or both? I can't for the life of me remember how it was done initially. Thanks.

Both times I had an MRI it was splint free. I have metal bracketing in the middle of my splint so that would be REALLY bad. Not to mention, they need to know where the teeth sit in position and the range of motion, so definitely no to the splint.

PS. Tell your kid to make songs out of the bumps and thumps.. that's what I always did and it made it a little more fun.

Thanks for your quick reponse. However, I am wondering if this test is worthwhile being done without his splint. The reason being is that he's wearing a repositioning splint, worn 24/7. Without it, his jaw will be back in the undesirable position, therefore not giving accurate results. Any thoughts?

I'm not quite sure what to tell you. I had both of my MRI's before I started splint therapy (twice). I still think it's a good measure to at least see where the discs are, and their possible condition, etc. As for the positioning, I'm not quite sure if it matters or not?

Doesn't a tomogram show where you are when a splint is in and an MRI when a splint is out?
