HI! havnt been here in a while! but im having this surgery done as a last resort to my problems. wanted to know if anyone has had this done? i have torn ligament and disc in the left sideof my jaw. havnt been able to open jaw more than 28mm in two years. also my insurance wont cover it....sooooo its goingto cost me close to 10,000.00 any one know where i can get help w/ that too?? my surgery is May 2nd and ill be off work for a month!well anyone out there who can give me some advice/answers would be great!!
I'm sorry that you have to resort to this- where is the graft coming from??
I don't know if you have seen my previous posts but I had a temporalis muscle graft in Feb. My opening was usually at 10mm or less. Recovery wasn't all that bad, certainly not any worse than the previous surgeries I have had (all listed under the "how many surgeries have you had" thread). My opening is now around 20mm and i could probably push it to 26-ish. The pain is a little better, but I am now in the "honeymoon period."
Will you keep your disc AND have the graft? Or will they remove your disc? You say "repair" but I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Has the doctor discussed with you what happens if it is not repairable?
Anyway, there are ways to help you with the bill. Ask your surgeon about "Care Credit" which is a type of credit card that can help you with the surgery costs. From what I have heard the interest is kind of high, but it's better than nothing right? You might also want to talk with the hospital, as I'm sure they know of some programs.
Another thing... will your insurance be paying for the anesthesia costs, hospital stay (I recommend staying at least overnight, it makes a huge difference), medications during your stay, etc? If not, depending on where you live, be prepared to pay at least 10-15 thousand more- and that might be something else to speak with the hospital about.
I hope you are doing ok, and keep us updated about your surgery.

My first TMJ doc (a surgeon) wanted to do this surgery on me too. Open joint surgery to suture the disc into place and a dermal graft (from my ear) to patch the holes in my disc. This frankly scares me horribly, so I only want to do it if I have no other options.
I decided to try one last ditch non-invasive procedure before going through with this surgery. I have a MORA splint that my second TMJ specialist (a dentist) made for me. It's supposed to reposition my jaw so that the discs can slip back into place. So far (it's been about 2 or 3 months), the left one has slipped back into place and now it hardly ever clicks, even when I open really wide. The right one still clicks though. And I still grind at night, unless I'm wearing my GrindAlert headband.

goodwillstacy, thanks for responding...the surgery is because my disc and ligaments are torn in my jaw...so they are going to go in and repair them i guess. ive gone 5 years battling this thing...im so much pain all of the time i just really cant take it anymore....but thank you for your input...
The procedure you have been discussing is one that I had performed about 12 years ago.
At that point, I had been going on my 6th year of TMJ horror. I was terrified as well.
But, when you are at that point of no return, you'll just about consider anything.
I have to say the surgery worked for me. I had ear grafts because for about a year...I had no discs. One of my previous surgeons had taken them out and put in temporary silastic/silicone implants in my jaw because he felt my discs were irreparable.
That surgery was amazing with the amount of pain relief it provide, and it was instantaneous. My opening had stayed stable at around 40-50 MM for 11 years...The best years of my life.
(it failed last year due to me biting down on a screw in a restaurant---it was hidden in my meal)
I hope my story helps you. good luck with the surgery
I see that this post is over a year old, but I am having this surgery done as well in a week and a half and I am wondering if it provided relief with y'all or if anyone else has had this surgery, has it worked?
My OS is going to replace the disc with dermis from my hip area...
I see this is an old post. BUt I wanted to find out a little more. I have been suffering with tmj for 14 years and I will be having a bi lateral Discectomy with dermal graft. They will be taking the graft either from my hip or thy. Any information would be very helpfull
