braces question - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

So I went to see my orthodontist and he believes that a car accident that I was in about three years ago is the reason for my TMJ. He thinks that when I hit my head against the window it knocked my jaw out of place. He then thinks that I went through another growth spert which made my jaw grow in the wrong way(I am now 19). Well he thinks that the anwser to my Tmj is to put me back in braces to bring my bite back to were it was. What do you guys think? Also I am a little confused about something. I am a big night grinder and I already have the spacers in for my braces and my splint will not fit on my teeth any more. What am I supposed to do with this now and when I actually get my braces on. Thanks for any and all help.

Hello,
It is my understanding that you don't fix the bite with braces unless you successfully completely Phase I. that is splint therapy. Hope this helps.

Hello! I was in an accident as a little kid and my jaw grew out of whack but it you couldn't tell by looking at my face, only on x-rays. So, fast forward to age 19. I go to an ortho who treats TMJ and other jaw probs and am told I have to have jaw surgery. Unhappy with this, I seek a second opinion, find current doc who does crazy thing with Herbst appliance (realigns jaw) and palate expander (opens hard palate). Wore them for a bit (2 yrs on Herbst, 7 mths on palate expndr). Currently, finishing up 3rd year of braces and about to be free and so happy! Ask about this stuff. The jaw has to be right or the tooth alignment will not last. Think about the future.
