Unhappy How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Symptoms:

Fullness/pain in left ear
sneezing (not that much though)
neck hurts
scalp tender and sometimes feel a pain in the head

I went to the ENT today thinking it was my ear. Everything checked out fine (ear, sinus, glands, throat) I do have acid reflux, but I don't think my symptoms have anything to do with that, anyway, how do you know it is truely TMJD, I mean, what if it were something serious to where someone needed to see a Neurologist and they shrugged it off as TMJD? How does one REALLY know?

Have you been to your dentist? My dentist was the one that diagnosed mine after listening to my symptoms. My GP isnt interested at all. The only way you can really know is to get an MRI of your TMJ I suppose. I have the same problems you have and also went to my ENT but that was fine.

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Mcruck,

This is sooooo maddening!!! I have allergies, TMJD (Diagnosed by a dentist and the ENT), Asthma, and back problems. What symptoms bother you the most? A new symptom I just experienced is the tender scalp with slight pain sometimes. It almost feels like it's a nerve pain thing and my ear.....it's been bothering me with fullness and pain and I can actually rub right in front of my ear lobe and feel the pain in my ear. But, my ear looked fine according to the ENT. I also told him that I have had drainage in my throat despite taking the claritin (which bothers one side) and he said he didn't see any drainage. What's up with that?! This is soooo frustrating!!!!

Hello,
There is only one way to determine if your symptoms are "tmj" related. "TMJ" is dislocation of the joints. So the only way to figure that out is by taking a tomogram and maybe a MRI. "Gelb 4/7" is the standard. If your joints are not within the "Gelb 4/7" then you will most likely have "tmj." So tomogram is really all you need to see if your joints are within this area. But it has to be read by a experienced and knowledgeable practitioner.

hope this helps,
GT

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

singer 1, I have tmj AND reflux, too, and it is WAS difficult to separate the symptoms. Reflux can cause the feeling of drainage. Im not sure if it irritates and cause mucous to form or if it is just the irritation. In my case, I think because the reflux affects my throat, that dental work makes everything worse for a while. Then that causes me to clench, which triggers the tmj...Its good to checjk everything out, but it sounds familiar to me.

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Hi, I have tmj, it's obvious....But I have been having mysterious tooth discomfort, had a crown put on, thought I needed a root canal but denist is not sure. No pain on tapping and sees no abcsess.....I have sensitivity to hot.....I have had an ear ache for like a month....Not bad but noticible on and off.......I saw 2 different ENTs and my nose and ear are fine.......I also have slight allergies and have had what feel like sinus headaches,,,,,,So who do I get to find out what the heck is wrong with me....( I have an appt with an endodontist in a month for further testing) I stupidly looked kup ear ache my Merck Manual and it says pain in ear could be referred from other areas( I knew that) and could be the first sign of cancer. So now I am even more scared and frustrated!!!!! maria

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Mariazzzz,

Can you elaborate on what you read from your Merck book? Cancer from ear pain???? What kind does it refer to? My Gosh!!!!! I'm pretty stressed now!!!!! Especially since my ears came out fine at the ENT! I feel pressure from time to time in one ear and now I am freaked out!!! How intense is your ear pain? is it in both ears? What did the doctor say about your findings? (Of course no doctor would probably link that together) What kind of doctor should I see about this? man, I can't believe how freaked out I am now!!!!

Hi, I'm sorry my post scared you. I am sure what I read about earache and cancer is not common. I looked up ear pain and in a grey box on the page it tells you what could be the cause of the ache or that it can be referred from other areas. Then it says "often the first symptom of cancer in any of these structures is pain that feels like an earache". This is the only place I have read this (granted, the Merck manual is reliable). I have been to 2 ents, my general doctor and dentist about this and this did not come up...It just scared me because this not one of the diagnosis I was wondering about. What did your doctor say about your ear problem? The ENT is the guy to see and you already have. My ear pain is in the one ear on the same side as the tooth troubles and most likely referred from the tooth into the ear and jaw, very common with tooth problems. It is not very painful at all, sometimes I forget it is there. I was just hoping it was TMJ and not root canal time. I wouldn't worry if I were you, first of all it doesn't sound like your pain is referred at all, it is in the ear and even if it wasn't there are many other reasons for it.....Please calm down, I'm sorry I made you freak out....Take care, Maria

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Maria,

That's okay. I did go to the ENT and I got no answers. I was told that I have TMJD, but I don't have the "jaw pain" or anything else associated with it. Just the ear pain and head tenderness on the left side. I am wondering if this is a nerve related thing stemming from the neck but there is no neck board here. I don't know. I can lay on my right side, but when I lay on my left side, I can feel the tenderness on my head and the ear pain is more prevalent. I'm just soooo frustrated right now because I don't know what doctor to turn to, or what test to request. I have PPO plan that allows me to go strait to a specialist if I want. I just don't know what kind. Where did you get your Merck book at? I have a Mayo Clinic book. I wonder which one is more reliable??? Thanks for your concern, it makes me feel better knowing I have you to talk to about my fears! Thanks!!!! Hope you feel better soon!

Hello,
Go to your regular doctor (MD) and ask for one. It's better to go to FJO dentists because they know that the joints, teeth, and muscles are all related. So they're able to tell you if somethings wrong with your joints. But remember that not all FJO dentists are experienced and honest. So finding one is a challenge in itself. Good luck.

Hello,
FJO stands for Functional Jaw Orthopedics. These dentists are different from your traditional ortho dentists. These dentists actually take the health of your joints into account when they give you braces. Do some research on them. Good Luck.

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

Singer,
I was told by my dentist that I had tmjd, but he just told me to go to a tmj specialist. 11 years ago, my insurance book had a listing for maxillofacial specialists. I found a doctor who was a tmj specialist under this heading. He is, in fact, a facial surgeon. So, he does face lifts and nose jobs also, but he is one of the best tmj doctors out there. He's done both of my surgeries. And, yes, the first thing he did was get an mri for me. I hope this helps. I don't even know how it works in today's world. Good luck.

Re: How do you know if it's truley TMJD?

hey there,
ive been seeing an ENT since i was a kid, but this ear thing didnt start till i was a teen. and i always complained and everytime they looked in there doctors said nothing was wrong so it annoyed me sooo much. i too have drainage, but i think it is just normal drainage, i think my doctor said nose sprays are good for that... like if i feel like it's bothering me i use this saline spray, it just cleans things out. people always are so grossed out because i spit all the time so i know what you mean. i also have mild acid reflux.. so its like we have all the same things, its weird hehe. well the way i kind of just know it is TMJ is that its been with me for years.. and it really clicks (in my ear) a lot when i swallow and i can make it click by doing something with my jaw.. it feels like its plugged, but the pressure is def. right at the place where the jaw bone is. did this just start recently?? is there anything you think may have caused it.. like dental work, or do you grit your teeth a lot? my ENT also said he has a theory that poor sleep patterns can cause stress on that area because a lot of his patients who have it had poor sleep. well, if it is bothering you, he told me its good to put a warm cloth on the area for like 10 minutes anytime it seems to be really bothering you.. so that may help ya out a little. dont stress though, because i think that is what will make it worse (i tell you this.. but i stress all the time lol)

ohh and i think you said you have allergies.. i went through like all these medicines and none worked.. eventually they just tested my blood and found out i didnt really have bad allergies, and now i take these allergy immunotherapy things instead.. so maybe have them test your blood?

goodluck
