Gauze helps? or hinders? in the long run do you think?

When my jaw is really bothering me I just recently tried using gauze. Sounds really odd, I know. When I got my wisdom teeth out they said to pack the holes with gauze, well I found out that just putting a bit of gauze between my top and bottom teeth on each side really helps when the joint is bothering me. I don't know why. Anyone have any ideas why this would be?
