Tmj Causing Change In Bite

I am wondering if anyone else has had a problem with an off bite with their TMJ disorder? My dentist/TMJ specialist recommended a splint which I have worn and it has helped my bite some, but it is still out of whack. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Does the bite eventually go back to where it's supposed to be or is it forever changed?? Feels like my bite is all on my back teeth. What a pain.

that is exactly what happened to my bite. All on my back teeth where I can't get the front of my teeth to close properly. I am in braces now to fix the problem.

Re: Tmj Causing Change In Bite

Hi Sircatnip,

My bite changed with my TMJ so much so that I started to get an open bite at the front which meant that there was space between my top and bottom teeth. My teeth used to clash together when I was talking too which was worrying! Anyway, my bite seems to have closed up gradually and feels more normal now although still a bit weird.not perfect. However, it's a lot better and doesn't interfere with eating or anything now and I don't spend much time thinking about it!

Hope this helps.

How long did it take for your bite to get back to "normal?"
Thanks

Also - did you have to wear a splint or undergo any kind of treatment?
Thanks

Re: Tmj Causing Change In Bite

I did get an NTI which I used now and again when I felt that I was clenching during my sleep. I also went to a physiotherapst who did deep tissue massage, ultrasound, and chinese cupping on my neck and back. This helped tremendously and slowly but surely over the course of about 6 months, my bite just seemed to close again. I also did some back and neck stretching and strengthening exercises every day. The physio also massaged my jaw too which helped. When I went to see her at first my mouth would only open 2 fingers but after a few sessions it opened to 3 fingers. Have you tried massage? There are a lot of posts on this site about the benefits of massage for TMJ.

Re: Tmj Causing Change In Bite

I have never tried massage. My insurance probably wouldn't cover it. I've been using ice packs and wearing my splint religiously and things seem to be getting better although slowly. Haven't had any headaches for 3 days!!!
