Magnesium as a muscle relaxant!

I think I posted this on these boards a while back, but it's worth repeating.

My TMJD symptoms flared up big-time after a crown was put on a molar. I was in severe pain for almost 6 months before it subsided. Not long after, I needed another crown. Same response! So I made a list of things to try to alleviate the symptoms. First on the list was magnesium, because it was cheap, non-invasive and had no side-effects (when used within proper limits).

I really didn't put much stock in it when I bought my first bottle. I was due for my next pain med. (which I'd been taking 24/7) but skipped it so that I could monitor the effect of the 300mg of chelated magnesium that I took. After only 15 mins. the spasms of the muscles of my TMJ began to relax! It felt like I had taken the pain med! It was nothing short of a miracle!

That was over a year ago and my TMJD has been controlled by taking 300-900mg of chelated magnesium daily. I take more around my menses bc. I notice and increase in my spasms during that time. I also avoid taking calcium supplements. Calcium is a muscle contractor and magnesium is a muscle relaxant. I've actually had mild spasms in my TMJ after drinking a glass of milk, or eating cottage cheese or a bowl of ice cream!

Anyway, 2 weeks ago I had another crown put on. I did have a mild reaction in my TMJ for about a week after, but NOTHING like with the first 2 crowns! Just some mild tightness that was relieved by heat.

I think the magnesium works so well for me bc. my TMJ is purely muscular and not so much a joint problem, per se. I only have popping in my joint when my muscles are spasming and pulling on the joint. So if you feel that your problem is mostly muscular, give it a try. A bonus is that magnesium supplements are good for you anyway. Just be sure to get a good "Chelated" form of magnesium and don't take too much bc. it can give you loose stools.

Re: Magnesium as a muscle relaxant!

My muscles are a mess. I've had to stop working out, and am now bascically a couch potato because any stress or activity sends my TMJ into orbit. Thank you for the info. Mine feels alot like it is muscular. I am going to pick some up and try it. Thanks!
