Temporal pain and tightness causing me such anxiety.

Hi,

I've been in braces for almost two years and was hoping that my orthodontist would remove them soon. At my appointment last week he said that my bite had slipped a little and told me to wear my rubberbands again. They connect my top teeth to my bottom teeth to correct/move my bite back to where it was. After wearing them for five days I developed a pressure in my right temple that has been continuous for the past six days. When I touch my temple, eyebrow, and the area above my ear I get a sharp pain that radiates through the area. I'm having difficulty sleeping because of the pain from my pillow touching the area. I have pain and pressure above my TemporoMandibular Joint not at it. I don't have any difficulty chewing or opening my mouth and these actions do not seem to make it worse. I stopped wearing the rubberbands four days ago with no relief. I've been taking 600 mg of advil every six hours and it does not seem to help. Does this sound like TMJ? My ortho was unsure and reffered me to a specialist, but I can't get in until next week. I've convinced myself that I have some kind of Temporal tumor. Please help!!! Thank you

Nicole

Re: Temporal pain and tightness causing me such anxiety.

I'm sorry you feel such pain Nicole. I know the feeling.

My pain was almost exactly like yours. I was convinced I had a tumour above my ear and temporally. However, from most of my research the first signs of a tumour are visual disturbances and other things like vomiting not preceeded with nausea. If you had a tumour in your head you would probably have difficulty walking - there would be physical symptoms.

Are you clenching your teeth either at night, during the day or both? I *was*. This was causing my pain and headaches. The pain and headaches led to anxiety and then I would madly start searching for what the cause was (i.e a tumour). This was a vicious circle.

I got an NTI about 5 weeks ago. It has been fantastic. I also downloaded a book in PDF format called "Splitting the Headache". I had almost every single symptom of TMJ headaches that were described.

THe day I was fitted for my NTI was very stressful. I had a panic attack at the dentist's office. However, when she checked me over she almost cried for me because she could tell how bad my jaw related muscles and temporalis were. She said something like: Owie, those poor little muscles need a break.

THe NTI has really, really helped. I have had pain free days! I can get by without taking pain killers (most days). I also practise keeping my teeth apart (lips together teeth apart, tongue resting behind my two front teeth - lightly)during the day (which is easier now because my teeth and jaw get a break all night when I wear the NTI). If I'm having a really bad day, I'll pop the NTI in and wear it for a couple of hours.

Have you tried ice? An ice pack helped me. I'd put a cube of ice on my temple and above my ear. Also avoiding stress (easier said than done). If I have extremes of emotion I clench savagely which ends with me in physical facial agony and a migraine.

What about ear pain? Do your ears feel full and you feel the need to "pop" them? This is another sign of TMJ. It was my first actually. Ear pain and a wax blockage were my first symptoms and then it just spiralled from there.

The NTI doesn't work for everyone. Have a look for the online book I mentioned and see if it applies to you.

Good luck.

Re: Temporal pain and tightness causing me such anxiety.

Karmais,

Thanks for replying. I was so worried becuase I've never had pain and pressure in my head for more than a few hours and nothing that a couple of advil wouldn't cure. I've tried ice and moist heat, neither seem to do much. It's hard to hold anything to the side of my head because of the pain. I know in the past when I had to wear the rubberbands for my braces I would clench at night but it never caused pain. I think because of the anxiety I'm holding my jaw tense during the day. I do have a little ear pain down deep that seems to come and go while the other stuff is constant. I'm not sure about getting something to wear at night. I think my braces are comming off in a couple of months (YEAH) but I will have to wear a botttom and top retainer at night for the rest of my life to keep my teeth straight. Because I'm an adult they will be more prone to moving back to where they once where. I'll check out the book, sounds interesting. I'm going to a tmj dentist on Teusday, hopefully I'll get some relief.

Nicole

Re: Temporal pain and tightness causing me such anxiety.

I'm sorry you're having so much pain. I wore braces for 16 months and had them removed in Nov. I still clench though and have to wear a soft nightguard when I sleep. I also wore one when I had braces on. It fit over the top braces. My bite shifted a bit after my braces came off, but I'm wearing retainers now and the headaches are still gone.

Why don't you ask your Ortho about getting a nightguard, even if it's only temporary. It works well for me.

Hope you find some pain relief soon.

Sue

Re: Temporal pain and tightness causing me such anxiety.

Hi there,
It has been a while since your post, but your the first person to describe my problem, but mine with chronic headache sine it began. But it snowballs for me with anxiety too. Hoep your doign better. I am pretty depressed, nausea tightness and dull pain all over head, but worse in temple, and I grind my teeth or rub them constantly. I am a stress case, think the worst always.

Take care,
Trish
