Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

im only 25 and have been dealing with this for 2 years now.

I get thick sticky mucus, or Post nasal drip after eating drinking, exercising, putting on makeup or perfumes, anthing that stimulates my body. The mucus isnt so much a problem as is the pain that goes along with it.

If I dont hack up the phlegm I get facial swelling and pain in my face, jaw and cheeks and sometimes hands feet and eyes.

The headaches come on about 20 min after I eat and my jaw really hurts and cracks and the mucus starts flowing.

Its depressing and makes me feel less attractive.

I have tried many diets and pills and sprays and supplements.
I think that avoiding gluten and dairy helps a little bit.

Im still trying to find relief for myself, maybe there are some sort of emzymes I can take or somthing....

DOes anyone else have JAW pain or facial swelling, headaches with their mucus? Id really like to know.

I have already been evaluted for TMJ, hasnt helped.

I had developed thyroiditis too as a result, both the mucus and thryoid problem happened around the same time. But levels are normal now.

Does anyone else have this???
Any advice would be appretiated.
THanks guys!

Christina

Re: Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

Yes, I have seen an ENT, been scoped and have a normal CT scan.
No sinuitis, my ENT said, my sinuses are clear.
I tried sprays, astelin, steroid sprays, decongestants etc, some of them dry up the mucus but the pain gets worse and I get more stuffy and puffy.
espically in my jaw, the muscles are enlarged.

Im pretty sure its somthing to do with my thryoid...

its really frusterating, does anyone know what im saying?

Re: Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

I have tmj and get alot of phlegm. I don't have the phlegm as bad now as I had it a year ago. I don't know why but i used to get a massive build up of mucus when drinking fizzy drinks or alcohol. Also my throat would get really sore the more alcohol I drank.

Re: Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

I used to get a lot of phlegm before the tmj but it stopped just around the time the tmj pain started which made me think the tmj did affect my sinus. I thought the phelgm was normal and the body's natural way of cleaning the nasal passages so when I stopped with that and my head became congested and then the tmj pain started I just assumed the lack of phlegm was due to tmj. But I am pretty sure sinus problems are listed as one of the symptoms of tmj.

Have you had thyroid problems in the past? Have you had your thryoid checked recently? My sister was recently diagnosed with thryoid problems and she is always complaining about mucus and a lump in her throat - is that what you saying?

Yes, I do have thyroid hashimotos disorder, and since the phlegm has thickened up and decreased,,,it used to run think and clear like a faucet, I have the TMJ much worse now. It drains down the back of my throat after I eat, and is really gelatenous, for about 10 min then it completely dries up and I get swelling and headaches and drymouth, and my jaw cracks and face gets puffy and achey.

This happens ever day all day, fand for the past year.

Havent been able to figue out how to fix it yet.

My sinuses are normal accourding to the ENT and CT scan, and scopes I had done. I have no allergies, only thing is my thyroid.

Is your sister on thyroid meds and does she have the puffiness too. Have you looked into getting your thyroid checked out either?

I hope this myxedema gets undercontrol, my Dentist says that i have a bone spur behind my neck and that there is arthirits in my jaw, and that my tissues are fibrotic and calcifying,,,all scarry terms, but im only 25!

im not that worried about haveing arthritis, but its the mucus, and somthing thats causing this, that I havent gotten the doctors to believe.....

how come when I can spit up the mucus and get it out my jaw doesnt hurt then? It has to be related, but the jaw and face? weird?

Have you checked on your Salivary Gland? Basing on your description, especially you feel more pain while eating.

Good luck!

Re: Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

I suffered with tmj when I was younger and still suffer with constant mucus build up. I have the absolute answer. I was seriously suicidal because of this problem. I went to thailand hoping a warm climate would help. It did but what really did it was a"drug" I found called N.A.C. a google it.

It is a vitamin that helps boost immune system. Zero side effects. Cheap over the internet. Try swanson vitamins (good results) it just this the mucous and it becomes very tolerable. Youll get better saved my life and have my daughter her dad back.

Re: Constant mucus and throat clearing with TMJ!

Ppboy,

I deeply feel your frustration and pain, I'm so glad you found something that brought back the quality of your life. at least life become more manageable and enjoyable.

It took me years to realize all my problem started out from bad dental practice, having top left molar pulled. It worsen after occlusal adjustment (totally unnecessary), thereafter lost 2 left bottom molars. Since this throws our body alignment balance off, it makes me realize the meaning of the word "handicap", in terms of not having full control of our body anymore. The most frustrating part is it effects my communication tools, like facial expression, speech, and body language, often times being mistaken, since I appear more dramatic or even meaner than how I truly mentally feel, .... and the bonus comes with sinus mucus and throat clearing and depression, just a wonderful bunch of things....

Over the years, going in & out of doctors' office, one would hope problems be fixed, but looking back the curve of stats, they don't look so promising, so I learn to live with problems, finding less intrusive remedies, instead of looking for irreversible fix.

But I think the biggest bonus of all this problem, is I had to view life differently through coping had I never have this problem. I always have abundance of sympathy, but sympathy can only go so far if without true empathy. So there, just something optimistic derived from our pain.

Thanks so much for your recommendation, will def. check it out, do some research, will keep you posted.

Best wishes!
