Help

Last July I went and got my wisdom teeth out. Since then the left side of my jaw (side where my oral surgeon put some major pressure on) gets stuck when I open it too wide and it cracks occasionally. I'm 16 years old do I really have tmj or is my disc just out of place. For a year now I don't have any other symptoms except for a sudden shooting pain in my ear and that's happened maybe 5 times. It didn't bother me so much because I kind of got used to opening my mouth in a certain way to get it fully opened but figured I've got to do something about this. So I found this home treatment on yahoo health...should I do that or should I go see a professional right away and who should I see...my doctor, my orthodentist, oral surgeon, dentist etc..

Last question would I need an operation (I hope to god this is a no)

Re: Help

What home treatment did you find?
Me, I would probably go back to the oral surgeon that pulled my wisdom and tell him your symptoms and see what he has to say. I think I would get it checked out so it doesn't get any worst and your young so you want to take care of it now. Good luck.

Re: Help

Well I don't think I could post links on this site so anyways it's just some diets and exercises to do with your jaw and the do's and don'ts. Well I guess I'm going to speak with my dentist first because he's the one who recommended the oral surgeon and then I guess we'll go from there.

BTW will I have to suffer from this all my life? Does the jaw locking and cracking go away if I get the splint treatment. Am I really going to need braces after that because I've already went through that and I really don't want to go through it again especially with my prom coming up next year.

Thanks for the help

Re: Help

liz...

I can only speak about what I experienced.

I was diagnosed with TMJ in 1998, when my jaw popped and then would not open. I have never had braces and I still do not need them even after wearing splints (upper & lower) for 8 years. I think it is a great idea to go and talk to your dentist. In the meantime stay away from gum, chewing on pencils, cewing on nails, and chomping on hard candy...just baby your mouth for now.

Goodluck

Hello,
You definitely don't need an operation to cure this condition. At your age, doctors are going to tell you things you want to hear and i hope you don't get rush into whatever they're trying to sell you. And don't be in a rush to get this treated. Once you let a doc do things to your teeth, it's only going to get worse.
In my opinion, it would be better to see a regular dentist and ask him/her to check out your bite. And do a search for my sn. I've written a lot about how this condition can be treated. If you didn't have this prior to the extraction, your bite might just be a little off that's all. Nothing major. Good luck. GT
