Grinding teeth/ tmj? cause dizziness?

Hey everybody,

I grind my teeth during the night and didn't know i was STILL doing it until i saw my dentist and he was like "wow, you really are grinding your teeth". I've been doing it since i was little, never had braces, and my jaw muscles often feel tight.

I also get dizzy/disequilibrium/spacey feeling sometimes and wonder if this could be related to grinding my teeth? and does this sound like tmj?

also, can grinding teeth/jaw clenching be associated with dizziness or the inner ear?

Thanks for the help
Scott

Re: Grinding teeth/ tmj? cause dizziness?

Grinding or clenching teeth may not cause the dizziness but if you are doing either to the point you strain your jaws and facial muscles then your eustachion tubes may become inflamed causing ear fullness or stuffiness and dizziness or feeling spacey. A night guard may help if you are grinding/clenching mainly at night. Also certain anti-anxiety drugs or anti-depressants cause some people to grind/clench more - although I don't mean to be presumptuous - just some info in case you never associated meds with either one - and the position of your head while sleeping can induce either as well.

Re: Grinding teeth/ tmj? cause dizziness?

When you say strain my jaw muscles, do i have to have pain in the jaw muscle to have strained it? or would stiffness/tightness be associated with such a strain or pull?

My jaws often feel tight/stressed, like i ned to bite down really hard or massage them to make them feel loose.

Thanks
scott
