TMJ exercises please please help!

Hello, I'm a newbie here, been posting on the inner ear forum for a while as I had those problems but now I'm starting to figure out after a recent visit to dentist that I also have TMJ. This would explain right sided temporal head pain, ear fullness and chronic ear pain I have been having. It's not great as it makes me really really dizzy and unwell on top of the ear symptoms I already have and I'm really really getting down about this constant dizzy world I live in. Think things have been made worse by having to have root canal last week and having my mouth open for so long.. I have another two treatments to get through and a crown fitting so really worried. I would really really appreciate you guys sharing any exercises you have found worked so Ican try and get this under control again. I have used wheat heat pads on the side of my face and opening and closing my mouth to stretch. BTW does anyone else get a tight almost numb like feeling on their face beside the ear??

look forward to hearing from you guys with all your knowledge! thanksx

Re: TMJ exercises please please help!

Here are 2 exercises one tmj dr gave me in a written handout - not sure if they actually help or not - I did not get much benefit from them but you could try them - they are called tongue lifts:

Bring your tongue up toward the upper palate where your front teeth and gum meet and repeat the word "NEAT" without letting your tongue come down as you say the word. Repeat the word a few times and then relax your mouth. Relax for a couple of mins and then repeat the same exercise but this time saying the word "NINE". Do this several times during the day.

One chiro told me to tug on your ear lobe very quickly - giving it one good yank - it should produce a squeek or popping sound - to reduce pain and pressure in the ears. Do one ear lobe at a time. But I found that even when he did it the fullness would return within a couple hours.

Since the ear pain, fullness and dizziness is usually due to inflamation of surrounding muscles affecting the eustachion tubes probably a "just as good" alternative would be an anti-inflammatory med or or OTC sinus or nasal decongestant - which obviously have to be monitored in terms of using them on a long term basis.

Facial and and even cranial tingling or numbing sensation is pretty common for most tmj sufferers. I think its due to the stress of the overworked or dysfunctioning muscles heightening the sensitivity of nerve sensors of the skin. When it extends to the outer limbs such as arms, hands or legs the cervical spine is usually being affected to a certain degree as well.

Re: TMJ exercises please please help!

Hello

My First dentist gave me a leflet which told me to keep my lips together roll the tongue to the back of the mouth to that soft area at the back and open my mouth as wide as i could it said that these exercises would make it get worse before it got better ...... and o boy it got worse !!!!! i found a new Dentist and he told me to rest it I'm not saying that this information is wrong I'm saying it didn't work for me over here in the UK we are so far behind it looks like the standard procedure is a bite guard and thats it .

Just be careful what you do, trust your self if it don't feel right don't do it ,there is so much information out there some good some bad ,just the same with Doctors and Dentists ,this site is a great place for information and help

Re: TMJ exercises please please help!

I have been doing all the excercises for weeks no releif. I have been dizzy every day for three months. I have severe headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, severe facial pain, and dizziness so bad I was out of work for a month. I just got a night guard to wear from the dentist last week. So far I can't tell. I do need a root canal on one tooth. However I am reluctant because I will have my mouth open for a long time. I do go to the chiro which has helped me to function. However symptoms aren't completely gone. I do take alot of herbal pills also. I want to try massage but, it's expensive and who knows if it works. Please someone advise me on anything!!!

Sally
