Unhappy Does this sound like TMJ to you?

Ok, well I have recently been getting migraine headaches, and also dull aches all over my head at any given time. Please let me know if this sounds like TMJ to you? Here are my symptoms:

Headaches
Eye pain mostly right eye
Occasional sharp pain in right temple area
seeing floaters in vision
Blurry vision at times
Tingle feeling in neck at times
ears are full and pop all the time
numbness in face, head & hands
Prickly feeling at times in face- jaw area
Neck/ back of head pain
Jaw feels tired
I can hear my heart beat in my ears, but when I pull my bottom jaw forward the heart beat in ears goes away.
Blood shot eyes (most of the time)
I have a pretty good over bite as well

What should I do, where do I go... what questions do I ask?
I am so lost on this one. I Just had a CT done of the head and sinus, my brain looks good but I guess I have a bit of a left lobe sinus problem.
SO NOW WHAT?
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot everyone

Although its possible your symtpoms could be due to some cervical spine misalignment (tingling, prickly feeling, pain in back of head/neck, hands,) I think the jaw and over bite issues may have to be addressed as well. You should problably go to an ortho trained in tmj or FJO and have your tm joints evaluated as well as the position of your lower jaw - which has a direct relationship to your cervical spine. A very good tmj dentist will either request a tomogram, MRI or dental ICAT (cat scan) to check for any physical abnormalities that would interfere with jaw functions, check your bite and do some muscle testing on other parts of your body to see how your central nervous system responds to pressure exerted - this will help determine if this is tmj related. If it is, then discuss with him what treatments he recommends. Most will prescribe either a splint or night guard as a first attempt in relieving the symptoms.

You may also want to go to a chiro and have your neck alignment checked as well. Either look for a chiro that sepcializes in sports injuries or tmj and uses an activator or a NUCCA chiro. If your jaw is a bit too far back it could be pressing against the C1 vertebrae (atlas) a bit and adjusting it sometimes brings about quite a bit of relief as well.

Re: Does this sound like TMJ to you?

I just posted in the headache section but from what I have been reading it sounds like all the things I've been feeling could be related to TMJ. I mean I know I have it because I fell off my bike and landed on my chin so ever since then my jaw pops. But it's only been recently that I have all these othe symptoms.

Ears and head feel clogged
general headaches
sharp pain behind my left eye and when that happens my eyes water
and my nose get cold
jaw has been hurting and making more noise on both sides lately
tension type headaches in the back of my head
dizziness
trouble concentrating
could anxiety be related to that also?

Do regular dentists deal with TMJ? And what do they do to fix it exactly?
Thanks for the info.

Re: Does this sound like TMJ to you?

Regular dentist don't usually treat tmj since their primary goal is with dental maintenance - cleanings, cavities, etc and overall oral health such as screenings for cancer. Some get into doing root canals and cosmetic dentistry as well like crowns, bridges, dentures. Most dentists will start out this way and then eventually seek additional training and study to specialize in other areas such as periodontists, endodontists, OS, orthos. So its best that you find an experienced dentist, OS or ortho with specific training in tmj, funtional jaw orthics, neuromuscular dysfuntion, cranial/facial pain. Those that tend to limit their practice to primarily tmj treatment tend to have more experience in the field but then their fees tend to be higher as well.

B/c of your previous injury I would suggest you see an OS or ortho since you may have pushed your jaw inward and caused some misalignment. Tests such as tomograms, MRIs or ICATs (dental cat scans) and sometimes a panagram or panarex (full head xray) are usually done to check for physical abnormalties that would interefere with function - such as the position and condition of your tm joints, discs and condyles and based on the test results a treatment recommendation is usually made. So before you get into the pros and cons of various treatments its best to find out first what may be wrong and then proceed from there.

Anxiety does have a role in all of this since most people internalize it which produces other physical symptoms such as grinding or clenching teeth, tensing shoulder, neck and facial muscles, etc all of which can eventually lead to pain and then the additional worry about not knowing what is wrong or how to fix it adds to the mix.

Hope that helps some.

Hello,
These symptoms are very tmj like. I don't know any other disorder that can give you all the above symptoms. But to be safe, you should rule out other things as well. But i have a strong feeling that you won't find anything.

I have been very consistent on this board. My advice is that you find a good fjo or neuromuscular dentist and do a search for "Gelb 4/7." Oh and do a search for my user name. I have been writing a lot about this. I think i quoted somewhere that it has always been the bite that caused tmj.
