nightguard question - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

Hi everybody,

I just started wearing my nightguard about a week and and a half ago. Just wondering if while my mouth is getting to used to it should I still have pain in my jaw and sensitivity in some of my teeth? I have been wearing it every night when I sleep and trying to wear it thru the day as much as possible as per my dentist. My teeth just feel achy, especially my front teeth. Did I mention that I had a root canal about 4 mos ago which still hurts as well. Any thoughts appreciated. And I agree with the poster who has had with the whole tmj, jaw pain, overall dental problems as well. My open bite has been painful and really disruptive to my everyday life. I am about at my wits end with it all and seriously thinking about dentures. Sorry to vent!! But enough is enough.

Unfortunately dentures could cause other tmj problems, at least that's what many drs have told me and there are also a few denture wearers here on the boards that have tmj pain and symtoms and some people just have a very hard time with them - but I understand you wanting all the pain to just disappear - in the beginning I asked every dr I saw to just pull my teeth as well.

Although you are still adjusting to it the night guard it may need to be adjusted so it doesn't put pressure on the teeth. In the mean time you could try taking an OTC pain reliever and using a desensitising tooth paste to help calm the nerves of the teeth.

Just wanted to shout out loud how wonderful my mouth feels since I have been wearing my niteguard. I had horrible pain in my jaw and neck and I must say since my dentist made me the guard and I started to wear it it has made all the difference in the world. Just happy and wanted to share that news
