Weird sensation after removing night guard? - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

Hi Everyone,

I have suffered from TMJ for several years, and have osteoarthritis in both of my jaw joints as a result of it. I can't currently afford any of the recommended treatment other than just continuing to use my night guard which seems to help. There's something I wonder about, though, and I wonder if any of you who wear a similar device have experienced this: In the morning when I remove my appliance, I can't put my back teeth together on the right side for about a half hour. Does anyone have a similar experience with their appliance?

No, sorry can't help with the splint question. But I was just wondering, what type of tmj problems do you have? Do you have the limited opening? Displaced discs? What are the symptoms of your osteoarthritis? And what are the recommended treatments that you can't afford? Some dentists have financial payment assistance available, I believe.

I think it means that overnight the splint has caused your bite to shift. Is your splint designed just to protect the teeth from grinding or is it to reposition your jaw?

I'm grinding so I had an upper horseshoe acyrlic one which I wore for a while. My teeth felt less sensitive on wakening and the facial pain changed from one kind of 'bad' to another kind of 'bad'. I know that sounds weird, but something was underway just not in the right direction. My view is that it was a trial and error splint but fair play to the dentist for trying.

Since then I've been in treatment with a specialist and I understand how exact these splints have to fit. We're talking about microns apparently. Start weaing mine at the end of the month and although its been exactly fitted the bite changes so quickly that I have to see him the next day and then two days later each time to make adjustments. As the bite settles the intervals between these adjustments get longer.

I have the same thing, except mine don't touch on my left side, right after removing mine. I have an upper stabilization splint that covers all of my upper teeth. I asked my specialist about this, and he said that it is because your upper molars were resting on the lower gums behind your lower rear molars, causing swelling of the gums; this is because your jaw is slipping back into a more relaxed position while sleeping. He said that as long as your teeth can touch a little while later, there is no problem with it.
