TMJ pain on top of head?

Hi. I'm pretty sure I have TMJ - have had it for years. Jaw clicks and grinds, used to lock up occasionally years ago, occasional jaw pain.

This past week, every time I bite down hard, there's a shooting pain at the top of my head. Is this TMJ related too? Seems strange that the pains are at the top of my head, no jaw pain - but it DOES happen every time my jaw closes.

Thanks in advance.

If the pain is triggered by biting then there is a causal link with your jaw which can 'refer' pain to different areas.
In my case it was behind the left eye and down into the neck and shoulders.
Are you getting any treatment? If not my advice is to see a specialist because its a progressive condition that can be treated by moving the condyles slightly down and forward. Over time if you clench and grind your bite 'closes' and the correct relationship between the ball and socket of the jaw joint becomes compromised.
I'm heading to the US at easter to consult with a specialist, lots of euros and air miles but it doesn't look like I have a choice

Re: TMJ pain on top of head?

I have tmj and I would say yes that is a sign of tmj. Have you been looked at by a dentist or oral surgeon? I let mine get out of hand and I have pain daily instead of an occasionial flare up. Also as stated in the earlier post, refered pain, pain that is somewhere you would not think tmj could cause the pain. I have it also behind my left eyeball, neck and shoulders. I think you should be looked at, and get treatment.

Good luck
