TMJ Dentist, TMJ Specialist in Kansas City area

Hello, I am despairly looking for a good Dentist in the Kansas City area who treats TMJ disorders. The only dentist I can find is a Neuromuscular dentist or a Bioesthetic dentist. I was seeing a dentist who I thought could help but he just adjusted my bite again and when that didn't help he referred me to a Bioesthetic dentist. I went to see him but his fees were way to high for my pocketbook. I am not sure how much a Neuromuscular dentist charges for treatment. If you know of any TMJ dentist in the Mission or Kansas City area please let me know. I am in severe pain and I feel there is no hope in site. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Re: TMJ Dentist, TMJ Specialist in Kansas City area

I am in the same boat. I live in Merriam, and have not had much luck finding a TMJ specialist. They all seem to have the "answers" till you get there and pay. I have been on a million different meds, my 3rd night guard and surgery has been recommended. But I hear that it is the absolute last resort. I have since gone to a Dr. Reeves in Roeland Park. He was very nice and a Christian, which was fabulous! He injected my jaw and Im supposed to keep going for a couple more months. They are also exploring the possibility of having fibromayalgia? I dont know, but Im sick of not eating, living on liquids, and I take pain meds constantly. This has really effected me alot lately. I cant run anymore and do the tasks that I used to do. Sorry, I cant help you out. I have a list of docs NOT to see, but none that have "fixed" me right up!
I just take my meds and not eat! good luck...

Thank you for your reply telling me about Dr. Reeves. His being a christian is a very important factor. Can you please tell me what dentists you went to that didn't help you? I read some of your posts and I see that you are taking Hydrocodone. Can you please tell me which dentist prescribed those for you? I am in so much pain but the general dentist I was seeing only gave me 16 pain pills that didn't last long so I am now in great pain. I just lay in bed with my heating pad and ice packs. I am feeling very depressed because I feel as if no one will ever help me. I know I have to move forward though and try to find a dentist. Have you ever seen a oral surgeon? It seems like I should probably see a oral surgeon for a professional diagnosis because I haven't even gotten a x-ray done. My jaw pain started a few years ago when a dentist said I was hitting my back teeth too much so he did a occlusional adjustment(grinded my teeth). Ever since that day I have had terrible teeth and jaw pain. I have had several adjustments since then and some bridgework and crowns but my teeth continue to hurt and my jaw has gotten worse and worse. Thank you so much for answering my message. I hope you get better soon. You will be in my prayers.

Hello again, I am having trouble finding Dr. Reeves in the phone books I have. I am not sure if we can put a address/phone number on here but if not can you tell what streets his office is located on? Also what oral surgeon did you see and did he help you at all? I also wanted to tell you that if you want to keep in touch now and then I will be here to listen. This is so hard isn't it. Most people don't understand the pain we are in. Big hug!!!!

When I first had to search for a tmj dentist they were sure hard to find - still are - I broadened my search on the internet to include cranio facial pain, oro or myofacial pain, tmd, neuromusucular dentistry, holistic dentistry, bioaesthethics, headaches, orthodontia, FJO (functional jaw orthotics), maxillofacial pain, splint therapy, etc as well as went to some of the nat'l web sites for Cranial Facial Pain Syndrome, Orofacial pain Syndrome, FJO, TMJ/TMD, etc. - many of them list members by location which helps you at least find a dr that has some training. Also check with any dental schools or universities in your state or nearby states since they also can sometimes offer referrals to qualified drs - many students that go on to become dentists with private practices return for advanced training and some go on to teaching, etc. Also if you are seeing a chiro or physical therapist, etc, ask them for a referral - they may either work with someone who has referred other patients to them or know of other dentists by word of mouth or reputation within the community. None of this of course guarantees you will find the right dr - as many of us know or find out through trial and error, some of the so called specialists are based on self proclamations only, so you still have to do your homework - but I feel the same way - I wanted a dr someone here may have gone to in the hopes I too could resolve this - and luckily someone did refer me to someone who is about 40 mins away - and although I still have not made much progress at least I know this dentist knows what he is doing - he definitely has more knowldge and training - that was easy to tell just on the first visit.

PS you can't post a drs specific address or phone number or web site but you can identify his full name and city and state

Re: TMJ Dentist, TMJ Specialist in Kansas City area

Dang, my jaw is really hurting today and I'm in tears. I have spent so many hours researching solutions. I'm 29 so my jaw bone isnt going to grow any differently, and my parents are gonna have to foot the bill for any major work done b/c they have cut my hours at work (darn economy).
I want to be careful what I choose to do since its their money. I dont want to "try out" a ton of dentists and splints and stuff only to have it not work.....
I honestly just wish I could get surgery done - but I know that is super painful and risky.....you'd think there would be a minor surgery that could fix it....
I just want to feel better. I hate being in pain every day (neck, shoulder, jaw) sometimes eating is painful. I take hydrocodone for the neck and I'm starting to treat tmjd with it, too> but i hate pain meds

Have you Kansas people found any specialists you trust?
I've heard that alot of people that say theya re TMJ specialists dont have all that much knoweldge - often all they have to do is take a class to be able to say they are specialists......

Re: TMJ Dentist, TMJ Specialist in Kansas City area

Hi chrisandylino, How have you been feeling? I finally found Dr. Reeves and his website(if you sent his address last time I think it was deleted by healthboard rules). I didn't realize he was listed as a physical therapist. I was wondering if the shots you got were prolotherapy shots. If so did they help you? He is a doctor that is listed with my insurance but I believe I will need a physician to send/approve going to pt. I really like how he is a christian. I sure do hope you have been helped. Sincerely 2
