When you get bite adjustments

does you dentist go by what his marks are after putting the bite strips in or does he ask you how it feels and adjusts it by how you feel your bite is?

I guess what I'm asking is how does your dentist do his bite adjustments.

Mine is by his marking paper and not by how I feel.

Re: When you get bite adjustments

Mine does both, he will go by the strips and then he leaves me to sit for 15-20 minutes to make sure it feels ok

Re: When you get bite adjustments

Mine is doing both. He goes with his measurements first, then asks me how it's feeling.

Re: When you get bite adjustments

The orthodontist has been just going by the marks. I didn't get asked how it feels.

Re: When you get bite adjustments

Mine also does both .. she goes with measurements and asks if its okay like comfortable enough.. i don't obviously tell her where to position my jaw , shes puts TENS on it so the jaw can be relaxed and works to where the jaw is in the most relaxed position but clearly that didn't work as my earaches are still here.. i'm getting constant muscle spasms!

also you know it may feel great after an adjustment then feel bad.. i don't like that because when will we just feel good , we cant keep going to our dentists forever?

temera2- you see a neuromuscular dentist then hey, I'm like that too, I never feel like my bite is even or balanced per say.

Re: When you get bite adjustments

This is interesting and makes me wonder if our dentists are working toward different goals (which is highly possible, probable, and perfectly okay). My jaw positioning was certainly not in a way that my jaw muscles could relax. It was set to match the dentist's measurements, and I was quite sore and fatigued in the jaw area for several days afterward. It's expected that I will have this any time my bite is adjusted because just like in weight lifting or exercise, the muscles are being asked to respond in a way they aren't used to - and they will become tired which is interpreted as sore/tender/achey by the patient. Now keep in mind, my issue hasn't been bruxism, but a problem with the condyle and disc placement within the joint.

He's been setting my bite so that the condyles are in the best position, then asking the facial muscles to adapt instead of relax. I think if my muscles were allowed to rest to a position of their choosing, my lower jaw would be far back and out of place simply because the muscles have been like that for over 30 years. I will say the first week it felt like my lower jaw was almost crooked and still too far back. I got used to it though, and it's much improved. I don't even notice now. Temera, are you also wearing a night splint?
