Help reading an MRI

My daughter needs help reading her MRI results. She won't be seen by her doctor for awhile now, but we'd like to understand the MRI. Here are her results:

Findings: Routine was performed mild bluring from motion is present. The disc on either side is likely suboptimal seen due to mild bluring. Secondary to degenerative change. On the left side there is a heterogeneity in the signal intensity of the mandibular condylar marrow consistentant with degenerative change. Mild spuring is seen anteriorly. The disc demonstrates ill definition and increased signal consistent with degenerative change. The disc is displaced and anteriorly in the closed mouth position and remains displaced anteriorly in the open mouth position. On the contralateral right side there is an unremarkable appearance due to condylar marrow significant spurring is not seen in the closed mouth position a disc is not clearly identified. Likely secondary to ill definition in increased signal from degenerative change. In the open mouth position the disc can be identified in itís normal position with the anterior band in the posterior band to the madibular condylar.

Impressions: Moderate degenerative change is seen in the left TMG joint with the disc displaced anteriorly in the closed mouth position without complete reduction in the open mouth position. Degenerative change is seen in the disc.

A lessor amount of degenerative change is seen in the right side. The disc is not clearly identified in the closed mouth position. Although it is situated normally in the open mouth position. Again degenerative change is seen in the disc.

Re: Help reading an MRI

I wonder if your primary care doctor could discuss this with you sooner than the specialist.

Sounds like there's degeneration of or like breaking down in the left joint and the disc is displaced towards the inside with your mouth closed. And degeneration of the disc in left and right side.

Is she having alot of pain?

I'm no expert but just recognize a few things from reading my spinal MRI's.

By the way, how is this MRI done. Are you laying down or sitting up?

Re: Help reading an MRI

I just had an MRI done for TMJ last week. You lay down on the table and they slide you into the machine. It took an hour for me and I couldn't move at all the entire time. The first40 minutes I had to keep my teeth together while they scanned. Then, for 20 minutes, I had to put a plastic thing in my mouth to hold it open while they scanned. By the time it was done, my jaw was VERY sore, along with the headache, etc. I would strongly advise to take an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever before going.
