Has anyone tried alternative treatments, acupuncture, dentistry, chiropractors, ect..

Hello anyone out there,

I am new to this site, and I am wondering, they tell me my discs are trashed, and need to be taken out, I am trying to get other opinions, to look at my CD from my MRI and to see if they are indeed that bad. I have heard so many unfavorable things about this and don't really want to do that unless there is no other alternative. Many oral surgeons here opt to do that, they don't seem to have as many other alternative treatments as in the US, Europe or the UK does. The oral surgeon says there is no way he can put them back into place, as they will not stay. I am scared, and would like to know what can I do about this?? Is there other options. I know I have heard of this on sites that have said they were told that and it ended up not to be as bad as the Doc made it out to be. I am hoping for a miracle!!

Alternative treatments like chiro, acupuncture, ultra sound, etc. may help your body deal and cope better with some of the pain and other symptoms but they do not treat the actual disc per se. Have your looked into prolotherapy and/or fat injections? Some people do fairly well with no discs and remain asymptomatic and for some the body may generate a pseudo disc over time. If you have only opted to see oral surgeons for opinions - as surgeons, they will generally opt for this since that is what they are trained to do, so if possible seek out opinions of other non-sugeon tmj specialists for other viewpoints.

Re: Has anyone tried alternative treatments, acupuncture, dentistry, chiropractors, e

I'm trying to bring up his thread, because I'm really interested if anyone has found something that works.....
I tried acupuncture in January, did 8 sessions, nothing happened. the doc could not even tell me what caused my pain. finally he sent me to the dentist because he was sure it was teeth-related.... the dentist could not find anything, again.... (he was the 5th dentist)
now I'm doing a special form of foot reflexology for a month. it has already helped some other symptoms, but it has not done anything with the pain.... but it may take a long time, months.... according to the reflexologist, she can cure me, I should not dispair.... but I would never have thought that my last resort would be something like this....

Hi Firefox,

How much pain are you currently dealing with? I've been told by many to treat the pain, not the jaw. This is because a lot of the pain you are feeling, may not be coming directly from the jaw, it could be the muscles around the TM joint.

Have you tried hot/cold packs and gentle massage? I've found them both to be helpful for pain relief.

Melanie.

I've posted many times on this board that I get lots of relief from Acupuncture once a week. He puts a needle in both temples and along my jaw line on both sides, as well as other areas. It's very relaxing also.

I have tried it all. I just found a new guy last week who is a dr, chiropractor, and accupuncturist. Get a three for one deal! He first does accupuncture on my jaw and when the put the needle in, i can acctually feel my ear "open up" (my problem is horrible ear aches). Then after he is done with the accupunture they give me a "mouth massage" It is kinda gross but I REALLY think I am making some good progress. They put gloves on and massage the inside and outside of my jaw for about a half hour. I have even got my insurance to pay for it under "chriopractic". I have been going M/W/F because he said my muscles need to be retrained to be relaxed. When I was going only once a week it would feel good for a day or two but then back to the same thing. The ear aches have gone from about a 9 level of pain to a 5 but now my jaw locks. In all honestly, I will take that any day besides the ear aches!

Yea, I have the ear ache torture too, this is new for me, problems for a year, just now got much worse and figured out it's TMJ. I'm going to try everything, acupuncture, chiropractor, massage and cranial sacral therapy. I know it'll be expensive, but I figure I've got nothing to loose. Get the earaches every day, it's a nightmare. I do the massage tomorrw, acupuncture Wed, Chiro Thur and I'm looking for a cranial person. I'll keep you posted on my progress, so glad you guys are on this site, this has been very helpful.

Re: Has anyone tried alternative treatments, acupuncture, dentistry, chiropractors, e

Well I have tried cranial osteopath, chiro, splints (which made me worst) and
I have decided I'm going to try NCR treatments, as my head is tight and my R. head is stuck with a lot of pressure which has just been agravated by splints on top of my dentures.

I have read when splints don't work or make it worst or if massage of the facial muscles dont' work, its a cranial mis alignment from either the birthing process and or hits on the head, braces, falls, dental work changing the bite all affect the headbones.

What is the cause of tmj?????? accidents or dental work or excessive grinding ( but I have a friend that has grounded all her front lower teeth down to the pulp and she does have headaches, for me it was a new upper denture that sent me on a tail spin 4 years ago, and so for 4 years splints and new dentures just made me worst. The cranial helped some what but the treatment is so light pressure it never really worked.

I think all the above mentioned treatments are good for mild cases, but I feel its a sturctual problem in the cranial system if the above treatments don't work.

Read about cranial dental connection. Most treatments are just a bandaid. The temporal bones house the tmj joint, and if they are misaligned or compressed and don't have movement the problem is not being solved.

This is just my opinion from my research, how I feel, and being a RN I know the anatomy. I am open to other opinions about this as all we all want to do is get better.

PS: one thing that helped with the terrible deep down ear pain I had was a chiropractor that works alot with children and he poped my ears, the bones in my middle ear were stuck and that has helped alot, whereas the dentist all said my jaw was too far back which is also maybe the case.

Also the maxilla is connected to the sphenoid bone whereas the mandible just follows the the temporal bones, so many times the problem lies with the sphenoid being misaligned and the palate is off.
