Broken Condyle - right TMJ *Update

Well.... over one month after my injury... I finally got insurance to approve the appliance! Turns out my company is self-insured and the insurance company just manages everything for us. So I contacted my HR department and TADA! 24 hours later it was approved.

Going next week to get fitted for the MORA appliance.

How wonderful for you, please keep us posted on your new splint and how it works for you, which hopefully will solve your problems.

Latest update... got my splint... finally...

It's the CLEARsplint (it's flexible and can be remolded)... and the doctor said I need to wear it EVERY night and as much during the day as possible except when eating. This splint is MASSIVE. I can barely talk when wearing it and it makes me look like I have Tobacco in my lower lip!

So... I did not get a MORA appliance... what I got is more like a fitted gum shield that you wear in sports... it's a soft appliance. Doc says he wants me wearing it all the time except when eating. Unfortunately, I can do that because I can't talk with it in my mouth.

Now, we are looking at Botox injections for the shoulders, neck, jaw muscle and forehead to relieve the headaches.

Next step is surgery.

Question Re: Broken Condyle - right TMJ *Update

Hi! if you don't mind me asking, how did you break your condyle? my 70 year old mother in law took a fall and has shattered both joints and has another fracture on the jawline. They did surgery yesterday only on one side and they are hoping for the bones on the other side to fuse together. her mouth is wired shut and will be for 3-4 weeks. they are saying after that, they will apply some type of rubber bands to keep everything in line for a while and then they have no clue what the next step will be. It's a wait and see what happens thing right now. I'm just looking for some insight from someone that has actually been there.

Mine's a bit odd actually. I had some minor popping and clicking for the last year, nothing that I was concerned about - did not seek medical attention... then in January, was at the sister-in-laws for dinner... we got to drinking wine and forgot about the pork tenderloin in the oven... needless to say it was EXTREMELY tough. So much so, that I could not cut it with a knife. So, trying to be polite I tried to eat it anyway. There was a very loud pop which everyone at the dinner table heard, they all gasped and turned to look at me.

And... here I am. Fractured condyle with disc so fragmented, it's not visible on MRI.

Re: Broken Condyle - Having surgery now

Well, I'm having surgery tomorrow. Getting a modified condylotomy. Tried the splint, tried botox injections, tried physical therapy... now it's time for surgery.
