Does anyone know of a TMJ specialist in Melbourne, Australia?
Hi everyone
Over here there doesn't seem to be any TMJ clinics or TMJ specialists, like there is in the US. At the moment I have just seen an ordinary dentist & an oral surgeon in relation to my limited opening of 1.5 -2 cm. The dentist basically couldn't do anything- he made me an occlusal splint, but I think all it does is protects my teeth from my grinding. I also clench, so I don't think the splint helps with that as my lower teeth can bite into the splint. He referred me to the surgeon as he couldn't do anything for me. I then went to the oral surgeon, hoping he'd have some conservative treatments. But he just jumped to arthroscopy & there is no way that I'm doing that at this stage & especially as I haven't been locked for that long.
If there is anyone that knows of any TMJ specialists in Melbourne or even anywhere in Australia, please let me know. I have been doing internet research & can only find general dentists that say they 'deal with TMJ problems'- but who knows how much they actually know. I want to find someone that is conservative & deals only with jaw problems.

Hi violet89
There is a physiotherapist by the name of Mark Latimer in Melbourne who specialises in TMJ problems. You will find him at Active Health Solutions in Doncaster East.

There's a TMJ dentist and orthodontist called Derek Mahony in Australia. I don't think he's in Melbourne though. I don't know him, as I am in the UK, but he seems to be well respected by the TMJ dentists here in the UK.

Hi---I looked on the ICCMO website for you, and there are 7 dentists listed..call each office, and make sure that they have practiced at least 10yrs., and also practice Neuromuscular dentistry, and also are a Functional Jaw Orthdontist as well as a Tmj specialist. Their practice must consist of at least 50% tmj related IMO....If you need help with all that, just send me a line. Hopefully one of them has trained at the Las vegas Institute, here in America..

Hi Violet89,
I see Prof. Alestair Goss in Adelaide. He's an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon. I've found him to be very good. He has helped me immensely, and will put you through all conservative treatments before even thinking of surgery. Obviously you'll need a referral and you can claim your consult on Medicare.
Good luck!
Mel.
