Electric jaw pain - TMJ Disorder -TemporoMandibular Joint Message Board

I was just wondering if this was a young persons problem??
I am not young , 77 years young, but have never had this problem of electric shooting pains in my left jaw until I moved into a retirement community. Los of stress.
My pain comes day or night. I can be calm or upset.
All of your letters have been a great help.
Would some of you tell your ages.?

I don't think tmj knows age to be honest with you - although it does primarily affect women in their 30's and 40's - not sure how true that statistic is either. You didn't provide much info on the present state of your oral health but electrical shocks or sensationss generally indicate a nerve issue or problem - either within the teeth themselves or along the jaw bone - trimengial neuralgia is one form of the latter. Have you had a dental checkup recently and mentioned this to your dentist?

OK, I'll bite. I agree with Thelma-Louise that shooting pains sound like nerve pain. My TMJ problems are the result of an assault that occured when I was 27 years old. I am now 52 and I'm just about ready for total joint replacements. I never had any problems with TMJ before the attack. I hope this helps. Peggy

I believe you are likely suffering from aome level of trigeminal neuralgia and yes stress will make it worse.

I agree with the trigeminal neuralgia theory. I thought that was wrong with me for a while but i only had sharp pains maybe a few times. tooth decay could definitely be hitting these nerves (tri=3, gem=2)and making it painful. I'd try out neurontin maybe?

im 24 and i had that as a suspect for a while but there were too many other symptoms and that wasnt severe enough. a myofacial specialist might be the key. Good Luck.
