Hi All just thought I would introduce myself as I am new to this site.

I am in Birmingham & I struggle to get any help from the NHS. My dentist first diagnosed my TMJD when I was 28 (I am now 33) & I was referred to the dental hospital in Birmingham where I was seen by 4 surgeons & half a dozen students! I was scared stiff at that appointment as they were treating me as a guinee pig, all having a look & feel of my face. In conclusion I was advised all sorts of surgeries, including reconstructing my chin to give me a more symmetrical face (as my face deviates to my right). The predicted 10 years of on going surgeries scared me off so that I never went back!

However on New Years day this year my jaw clicked like never before really causing pain & limited mouth opening so I went back to the dental hospital, I couldn't believe it when this time all I was told I needed was a splint!?

I decided to look for answers & help elsewhere & am currently recieveing treatment from an osteodontic (a marriage of osteopathy & dentistry) and after 5 sessions so far I am starting to feel improvements, certainly with aches in my shoulder and the opening of my mouth isn't as restricted.

My osteodontic has referred me to a private specialist dentist based in Leicester I am waiting for my first appointment with him to see what he suggets.

WOW good luck im glad you didnt do all that surgery that sounds scarey.i hve really bad tmj and in the process of getting a night splint made.........i however think i may need a repostioning slpint for day day and my dentist dosnt do these so will have to find someone else..........but good luck.what is your osteo doing is he doing internal mouth sstretching and alignment of neck etc?

I had tmj - It went away as soon as i took Prozac or Zoloft. They found out that low serotonin levels cause tmj. I only took it for 3 months it worked!! I had SEVERE TMJ and thought i was doomed for life.

Hi Nessie,

My osteodontic is remoulding my bones, he is 99.9% confident that the way I was born (by forceps) is the cause of my TMJ, the way they pulled & twisted me out damaged my skull, meaning that as my skull grew it grew distorted, which is why my face is assymmetrical (it is obviously assymmetrical and does knock my confidence). So he is remoulding the bones in my skull to manipulate them into the proper position. He applys slight pressure to certain parts of my body, manily my back, my left shoulder which gives me a lot of trouble & my neck & face. It wasn't until my 5th appointment that he applied pressure inside my mouth on the roof of my mouth.

My husband was very dubious about this treatment & by my 4th appointment I didn't feel that the benefits were too great & I started to doubt it too however after my 5th appointment, I feel so much better & can all of a sudden open my mouth wider than previously & I can chew more comfortably & eat food I previously struggled with, so I am now really greatful for the help he is giving me.

Hi gimaqt, I am really happ that you found a medication that eased your tmj, that's great! I'm afraid in my case medication hasn't worked, but I have now found someone who is helping me.
