So sorry you are so young and having to deal with this..I got tmj from braces when I was 19. Muscle spasms started right away in jaw joints, neck , shoulders. I now have grating sounds in both joints, and popping in my right joint as well. Whatever you do, please do not get braces right away again to try to fix things!!!! Find a good tmj specialist in your area and ask a million questions. Don't do anything that is not reversable right now. Look at older posts of people going through this, * link to commercial website removed by hb-mod, moderator * Good luck on your search. Post where you live and maybe someone can let you know of a good doc..

Re: TMJ very confused?

Very sorry that you are having all these pains and can't live a normal young life.

The forward head position can be caused either by the absence of anterior contacts ("stops") or by the lowered VDO (vertical dimension). Maybe by other things too, I am not sure.
In these cases the jaw "slides" forward and brings the head with it as well. This causes the misalignment of the whole body. The neck hurts b/c it is trying hard to hold the head on the shoulders while the head is out of balance, the shoulders have to hold the neck and so on; the spine curves to compensate for all this and might cause the lower back pain.

Do you touch the front teeth when you bite when being in the most relaxed position you can be? Do you feel that you can be more comfortable if your teeth would meet "sooner" when you bite?

It was a very good advice: not to do anything irreversible on the teeth until a dentist will make you pain free and comfy with the splints and so on.
It's great that you are doing the body work like chiro, DT-massages, etc.
Try to focus on keeping a good posture after them despite the teeth which might throw it off. Try not to touch the teeth when you do this. It can help you figure out where your jaw really wants to bite and not where the teeth move it.
Hope this helps.

Re: TMJ very confused?

I had severe TMJ many years ago. What helped me the most was the stretching exercises. I had to bend my head forward and to the sides in different positions. I learned about them in a book on TMJ. Also I went to see a prosthodontist, who made me a night splint, which was a lifesaver. I also got acupuncture. If you can find a good acupuncturist, it can mean the difference between pain and no pain. I had to go back in about one year, because it wore off, but it is worth it if you can stand being poked with little needles. Massaging the temple and jaw bone also helps.
