Where to turn?

I am new the the forum and new to TMJ (3 weeks), but it has brought me to my knees already. It began after a root canal of the most rear molar.

Just like many of you, I have already been to my MD, dentist, and an oral surgeon with no help. When they hear my symptoms they all treat me as if I'm exaggerating or a little nuts.

I am so torn between seeking help and not, because it seems that so many people have been further injured by the treatment that they have received.

If there is a trustworthy doc in, or close to southern CT I would love to know.

Thanks!

Brian

Re: Where to turn?

HI Brian --Sorry to hear you've developed tmj symptoms. I've had it for 17yrs. It's pretty much a nightmare at times. Please look up Dr. Stack in Vienna Va.. He might be able to recommend someone for you. I've heard good things about him, and contacted him briefly myself, but i'm in IL. and that's a little far for me to go. Whatever you do, consult at least 3 doc.'s for you condition before agreeing on anything, and don't let them change your bite right off the bat--go very slowly, especially since you've just had it for 3 wks. Please tell us your symptoms, and we will put our 2 cents in..Let me know if you have any further questions--Good Luck. Jill.
ps-go onto the tmj boards and click on the great tmj doctors thread and do a search of surrounding areas to try to find someone good in your area that someone has recommended..

Re: Where to turn?

Brian--I've heard on many posts that after root canals way in back of mouth, or dental work done where they stretch you very wide can cause one or both of your discs to become displaced. Have you gotten any x-rays yet? also, the molar they worked on might have gotten altered and your bite might be slightly off, thus causing all the symptoms. I know it's extremely frustrating. Post another thread to exactly where you live, and I'm sure someone knows of a specialist. There is a pain diagnosis center with Dr. John Droter dds as the head, in maryland, you might also want to call there for a referral. Google Myofacial and tmd pain mgt. centers and see if any come up by you. J.

Re: Where to turn?

Thanks again Jill,

I have had a panaramic x-ray done by an oral surgeon. He did it with my mouth closed only, and he didn't even raise an eyebrow when looking at the x-ray. He seemed very unconcerned about the whole thing. My bite is very off now, so I would not be surprised if the discs have been moved/displaced. I would really love to have an MRI to check the discs, but I don't know who would call for it or if my medical insurance would pay for it.

I live in Stamford, CT. It's about 35-40 miles from NYC. There are a couple of dentists in the area that advertise help for TMJ, but judging by their websites, they look like charlatans.

Re: Where to turn?

Hi--I've heard on some older posts about great NYC docs, and I'm going to do some research on your area. It's best to have a referral, again -do a new post on exactly where you live and an older member may know of a good doc. I'm going to do my best to help you. I know how frustrating this is, because i've had a horrible relapse of symtoms since Feb. that's making my life an utter nightmare right now. (I've got the crackling of joints now with popping, muscular spasms.) I'm also looking for a doc. and I know how desperate you can get. Do as much research as you can. I don't think Panoramics give a good enough look into what happened. YOu might want to get an mri or a cone beam scan done. As far as the $$ involved, Most ins. co's won't pay for any tmj treatment, but please don't let this hinder you getting care. The faster you get treatment after onset, the quicker and easier it is to recover..trust me, I'm living proof of that. I'll keep you posted on what I find. Later--Jill. --ps. I've learned a wealth of knowledge by reading old posts ..Keep reading!!!

Re: Where to turn?

Hi Brian! I also live in CT and have had a tough time finding a good dentist! Been just pretty much suffering! There is a dentist in Stratford, CT. Dr. Hoos (* link to commercial website removed by hb-mod, moderator * ). You can actually email a question to them and the dentist will even call you and talk to you and discuss what he thinks and maybe he can make a recommendation for a dentist near you. All this, and there wasn't even a charge. Good luck and let me know if you do ever find a good dentist in CT. I am up in the northen part of CT near the Mass line, but at this point driving might be the best bet.

Re: Where to turn?

Thanks Cheryl,

I did come across Dr Hoos' website and it's not too far away from me.

Re: Where to turn?

Hi Jill,

I emailed them to see if they could refer me to a local dentist who has been trained at their center.

Thanks for all of your efforts in tracking down a doc for me.

Brian
