Good TMJ Docs in NYC, North/Central NJ, or Rockland County NY

Hi,

I live in Bergen County, NJ and I'll be starting law school in lower Manhattan this August.

I'm looking for a doc/dentist to treat my TMJ anywhere in NYC, North or Central Jersey, or Rockland Country NY. NYC would be best.

If you could please let me know why you recommend/do not recommend a particular doc/dentist, and if you feel comfortable, how much they charge, that'd be excellent.

Also, if anyone is familiar with the TMJ Clinics at NYU or Columbia, how were they and what doctors/dentist would you recommend there?

Re: Good TMJ Docs and Docs to Avoid in NYC, North/Central NJ, or Rockland County NY

I tried the Columbia and NYU routes - didn't get too far with each - my pain was so severe at the time that time was of the essence and they have long waiting lists for initial appts plus they tend to shuffle you from one dr to another and at both places I got lost in the shuffle and no one in particular was in charge of my case - they are good I would imagine if your tmj problem is not incapacitating and has not morphed into dental distress syndrome. I did use NYUs Pain Mgmt Clinic for several months to find the right types of drugs to help control pain and spasms - and once I had a somewhat tolerable combination of drugs that provided some relief I stopped going there and asked my PCP to prescribe them going forward. I have been to several drs in NYC and really can not recommend anyone in particular - they all seemed good but none of them were able to solve my problem.

At one time Dr Dennis Tarnow was a chairman at NYU - he has a private practice in NYC - he seemd good but his fees were just too prohibitive for me to even consider treatment by him. There is also Dr M Gelb (the most well knowned and his staff got my medical insurance to pay for his treatment) and a Dr J. McClendon (bioaesthetic dentist) and Drs Alex and Bruce Greenburg (brothers - one is an OS and the other an Ortho), Dr B Cooper - there are quite a few.

Wish I could help more but if there was one in particular I would recommend I would be seeing that guy myself too.

Thanks Thelma-Louise. I'm leaning towards crossing Dr. Gelb off the list so far based on what I've read on the board, unless you think I should still consider him for my relatively "mild" TMJ problem. For the others I'll see if they are covered under my medical insurance. Otherwise its off to the NYU or Columbia clinics and student doctors (hopefully WELL-supervised by "expert" faculty) for me.

by the way, do you know how much NYU or Columbia charge for their TMJ clinics? I know Columbia charges $85 for the initial intake, but I'm wondering about when I'm referred to a specialist clinic. Any idea whether the "discounted" rates include splints/oral appliances as well?

Please keep me informed if you find any good doctors in the Tri-State area. Best of luck with finding one that works for you!

tmjruinsmyday: I was gonna just drop you a line to ask you to please stay in touch about your experiences, as I live in Bergen County and am looking for a doctor. I have found some recommendations through an e-mail list I"m on but the problem is finding someone who takes my insurance. I'd rather not go to the city if i don't have to so I"m looking in Bergen Co, but at some point I might need to go into the city. If anyone wants to tell me to avoid any docs in the Bergen Co area, please do let me know!

Re: Good TMJ Docs and Docs to Avoid in NYC, North/Central NJ, or Rockland County NY

Good Evening,
I realize that this thread is a bit old, but I thought maybe someone was still checking it. I read that you were going to try the clinics at NYU or Columbia. I am being treated by doctors at a dental school, but I don't go through the clinics. I go through the Private Practices of the doctors/dentists. I've found that the professors, who are obviously the top people have private practices. They usually see patients once a week through this office. I've worked with two dental schools this way, and I've always gotten top notch care.
I hope this helps.
Peggy

Re: Good TMJ Docs and Docs to Avoid in NYC, North/Central NJ, or Rockland County NY

I went to one dr (private practice) that was head of a tmj dept in a NYC dental school and b/c my bite was basically destroyed by other tmj drs and I needed a full mouth reconstruction he wanted $25K for temp crowns and bridges and $35K for perms - too rich for my blood - and no guarantee this would solve my problem. So he suggested I go to the school itself and get it done through there but they had a 3 month waiting list just to get in the tmj clinic.

The other issue with using a dr that is also a professor is that they are not always available for "emergencies" since they are either teaching or at school or attending seminars and conferences, etc - so unless your emergency occurs on the day he is scheduled to be in his office you have to wait for his return; sometime you can see their "stand-in" but when it happens often enough - its almost like you're paying one drs high fee but getting another drs treatment.

It didn't make sense for me but I am glad it worked well for you.
