Has anyone seen Dr. Sylvan Mintz in Rockville, MD?

He was just recommended to me and is actually close to where I live. Anyone seen him? Thanks, Stephanie

Re: Has anyone seen Dr. Sylvan Mintz in Rockville, MD?

Dr. Mintz has been my TMJ doctor for the past two years, and we love him!! Before seeing Dr. Mintz, I saw a different TMJ specialist in the District who did all of these fancy tests (that we later found out were totally useless; all the doctors really need is an MRI) and therapies/treatments that were really painful. He didn't want any other doctors involved and it was a ridiculous amount of money (for example, we paid around $300 for me to sit in a room with infrared lights on my face for 20 minutes!). Then, the oral surgeon who was treating me recommended Dr. Mintz, and I can't tell you how lucky we are to have gotten that referral!

Dr. Mintz presents you with all of your options, and then tells you what he believes is right for you. Because he also treats things like sleep apnea, he's used to making very complex splints so is really attentive to detail when it comes to the TMJ splints. I've also found his splints to not only be the most comfortable, but to relieve the most pain. Also, Dr. Mintz is very good about explaining everything in full detail and in an understandable way (he has this little "toy TMJ" that is really helpful when he's explaining things). He answers all questions very thoroughly, and I've never gotten the "bums-rush" feeling with him because he takes all the time each patient needs. Like pretty much all specialists, Dr. Mintz is very against TMJ surgery, but he's open-minded enough that if one of his patients clearly needs it, he will send them to the right surgeon and make sure they have a good outcome. I am a total surgical case of TMJ, but Dr. Mintz helped me avoid my first surgery for 10 months. I have needed more surgeries since then, but before all of those surgeries, Dr. Mintz has come up with more things for me to at least try just to buy me a little bit more time before I need to go under the knife again (e.g. different type of splint, different PT, etc.). Overall, he genuinely cares about each and every one of his patients, and whether your TMJ is minor or really bad, he will find a solution for you.

Thank you so much for taking time to respond with such a helpful, detailed answer to my question. I really appreciate it. I was leaning towards scheduling an initial consult w/Dr. Mintz and your comments helped me decide to do it. Thanks again, Stephanie

Oh - I do hope someone will put his name on the Great TMJ Dr sticky post - if its not already listed there - so others might benefit from him down the road. Its so hard to find good dentists and having other members refer them helps narrow the search down a bit and lessens the worry and frustration one often feels when trying to find a competent dr.
