hello everyone,

Had my first TMJ evauation ($175) and was told to come back and pay $3000 for a Phase1 treatement. Does this sound reasonable to you:

i DO NOT have a jaw click/pop and most probably is muscular. Any help/onput is appreciated. I have pain in the left ear/pressure in the same year, teeth pain on the upper left side.

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

My first appt was $285 that included a basic patient evaluation fee, a dental xray, and a cat scan. This was actually cheaper due to the fact that he only accepts out of pocket payment.

I was given a diagnosis and then told continued treatment in the amount of $2900 (first phase) would include: three months worth of office visits, a custom made mouth piece, and any additional in-office fittings for my mouth guard.

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

Thank you so much; I felt that something is wrong with this estimate. Since I do not have a diagnosis yet, how can they know I need a MORA appliance. I am not saying I need one, still we do not know yet. I have big problems on the left side and the Jaw is not dislocated, nor does it pop. Still, I have pain. Thank you very much. I will call and ask if they agree to first to the testing and have a diagnosis, and only than we could talk about treatment. If they don't (which I feel it will be the case) I must find somebody else, far away. Not much choice of doc for TMJ in richmond, va

Call Dr. Stack's office in Vienna Va., and see if he can give you a consult. It's always good to have a second , 3rd, or even 4th opinion. I live in IL. and I'm getting treatment in Middleton, Wi. if you want the name of my specialist, let me know. By the way, how did they know you need a MORa appliance? That is used to bring the lower jaw forward. Do you have an underdevelped Lower jaw? Also, are your discs in the correct position?

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

Thank you so much; they do not know yet anything; they just gave me this long list and was told that all testing it will be performed in two hour appoiment. But I do not have a diagosis. How can I agree with an appliance. My TMJ is mainly because of stress and bad position, my jaw is not dislocated and have never had a clicking noise. Yes, I would like to try your doctor in Vienna. Do you have a website/number? I do not even think I need all the X-rays; I would like the joing vibration and maybe another one or two test done, but it seems to me I am exploited. I had already 4 unnecessary root canals (because they did not diagnose TMJ). I have paid over 7,000 to be mutilated. No more, i have had enough. THANK YOU SO MUCH

I have talked to Dr. Stack via-email, and he was very kind. I believe that he is one of the leaders in tmj treatment. I talk to the mom of one of his patients regularly, and she is happy with her daughter's treatment. Just google Dr. Brendan Stack, and you'll get his office #. He may need you to get an mri to see more about your condition, but I may be wrong about that. It would n't hurt you to get a consult from him. Call his office and see how much they would charge, and if they can do the tests you want there. Otherwise, like I said, if you are willing to travel, I know my doctor could give you an honest opinion. I'm sorry you had so many root canals done. That's terrible, and what you paid for them...Gotta love dentists! uggg. Let me know if you have anymore questions, you can private message me if you want.

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

Thank you so very much! I cannot believe how kind you are. I will call and try to set up an appoiment. It was an awful 9 month experience (7 months of antibiotics because they thought I had all kind of imaginary infection, indomethacin which had me bleading and almost dead until I realized I had to stop taking the poison, and much more. Thank you again, I found him.

If you go see Dr Stack would you please post an account of your visit and what you thought about him and his practice - I have been debating whether to make the long trip there to see him just for a consult and get his opinion regarding my problems - just want to know whether it is worth the travel or not - if he is as good as some say or not, as others say. Thanks.

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

I will, I promise; It's so hard to know in this field who are exeptional doctors and who are the impostors. In Richmond, VA, I just saw someone who is supposed to be brilliant but very much looks like he wants to milk me. I had one initial appoinment, 175 and he said he I have to agree to the list I am pasting bellow For a Phase1 treatement. Does this sound reasonable to you? iN MY CASE there's no clicking or poping and it appears that it's rather muscular. Still the symtoms are maddening. But how could you suggest a contract with a treatment (like MORA) when you (the DR) don't know yet what's the diagnosis. MORA is necessary sometime, but so far I do not know what's wrong in there.

No problem, Dr. Stack I believe is very near to retirement, so don't be taken back by that. I'm sure he has great contacts and can stear you in the right direction. If you are just a tmj muscular case, you can be cured much easier I think than if your joints have sustained major damage, and your having clicking and locking and all that fun stuff. I now have some arthritis in my joints, but my doctor is really not concerned about that so much as he wants my condyles in the proper position so my tissues can heal and I don't have so much grating. The biggest hurdle in all this is overcoming stress from the situation due to just plain being terrified, and losing everydime you have to the dysfunction. I have to warn you though if you really want to get better, you will probably need PT, Chiropractic care, and massage therapy as well. (Atlas ORthoganist Chiropracters only please...)

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

Dr. Stack's assistant, Angela cut me off. Initially, on the phone she was nice, but on her last emails she said to look for someone else on my own. Very dissapointing, but what can I do?

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

So what happened with Dr Stack? Not sure I got or understand what happened when you called his office - what was said in your emails with his assts? Keep in mind its not the asst who will be performing treatment - although I have wanted to punch a few assts in the face myself as their comments can sometimes be so offhanded and condescending - especially the ones that suggest your tmj is due to stress only or that you are being overly dramatic and exaggerating your pain. I have also encountered some dental offices however that do make it almost impossible to stay with them, good dr or not - so what happened, if you don't mind me asking.

Ths cost is reasonable - I have been quoted much higher by others - $5K-$7K but NY is like that to begin with. After my first failed attempt with splint therapy I stopped agreeing to contracts and instead opted for sevices ala carte but contracts can in the long run save money - but only if you respond as anticipated or expected to treatment - also assuming a diagnosis has been made, etc.

PS who requested the CAT and MRI - a tmj dentist or your regular PCP?

Re: Tmj diagonosis & cost evaluation

Thelma,

Over the phone the assistant was nice; in the emails, she was a b. She said that the MRI of the brain was no good, but now talking with other memembers of these board I hear different opinions. The CAT (without contrast) was requested by the ENT the MRI of the brain (with and without contrast) was requested by the PCP. As I type now, I am in pain; my left ear has sharp kinfe-like pain, I have ear pressure. Stress does contribute to the TMJ as the muscle (neck, shoulder, back, and face) get tense and do not relax, but that does not give anyone the right to be condescending. I wish on them the pain we feel. I guess, if you know of any good TMJ dr in MD, or around VA please let me know. This is no life.

Don't worry about the asst'. You have the right to still be seen if you want by Dr. Stack. The asst'. at my old dentist office was the same way, and I would literally get into arguments with her, but that didnt' sway me from treatment. Some people have no patience and sympathy. That's their problem--not ours. Just keep your mind on finding what's right for you, and you'll be fine.
