chiropractor and TMJ

Hi everyone,

I was recently diagnosed (first suggested by a dentist and an ER dr and now a chiriopractor who examined my jaw), and intend to see a chiriopractor. Any suggestions? I also have a pinched nerve in my neck and a herniated disc (slight I think) in the neck area. Could that be complicating or even causing TMJ? Thanks!!

Yes it could so you may want to first get an MRI of the c-spine and have that looked at and treated before being treated for the tmj. If the tmj symptoms don't respond (ease up or go away) with treatment for the neck problems then you may want to see a specialist for the tmj and have MRI's done on the jaws.

Hey Thelma, thanks! I got an MRI done in late May and the herniation appeared there... I forget where tho, so have to see the report, but interesting that they can indeed be related. I feel like I've had TMJ symptoms for 10 years. I've never really had headaches (is that common), but have had dizziness recently, making me think it's getting worse. I also had an MRI of the brain to rule out other stuff and thankfully it was clean.

Well with tmj not everyone gets all the same symptoms - some do and some get certain ones, some get even more than the more common ones - it depends on the exact cause of the tmj and how advanced it has become. But the neck can cause similar symptoms such as headaches and symptoms associated with migraines like nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, dizzyiness or equilibrium issues, etc - because the neck and jaw share the same muscles.

Sean, Welcome to the club. The bad news is that TMJ problems can make you pretty miserable at times. The good news, which way outweighs the bad news, there are a whole bunch of therapies that can be used to get relief from your symptoms. I've worked with a chiropractor for my TMJ and I've gotten some relief. I know people who have gotten complete relief through their chiropractor. The level of relief depends on what's causing the TMJ.
Were you in an accident? I see that you've been to the ER.
Oh! I agree with Thelma-Louise that the neck and TMJ symptoms are connected at the neck and TMJ are connected. From what I've read, Thelma-Louise has lots of good information.
